Phuket Tourism and Sports Ministry Seeks Expat, Thai Volunteers

Monday, October 6, 2014
PHUKET: Expat and Thai volunteers are being sought by the Phuket Tourism and Sports office to help protect tourists on the holiday island and to work in specific projects.

Those who successfully complete a two-day course will be registered and issued with ID and uniform shirts.

Santi Pawai, chief of the Ministry of Tourism and Sports office on Phuket, was recently also given the role of Director of the Business and Guide Registration Branch.

He says the volunteers will work with Tourism Police and local police in projects that could include action being taken against illegal touts and guides.

Applications are being taken at the department's office at Surakul Sports Stadium in Maeluan Road, Phuket City.

After the deadline of October 20, successful candidates will be informed of the next step. Updating seminars are likely to be held every six months.

Khun Santi has led a drive to reregister all guides on Phuket so their details can be entered in a data base.

So far 2294 guides have been registered out of a total of 4000 guides thought to be operating on Phuket. Tour agencies also have to register. Khun Santi believes that instead of registering, some have simply ceased to operate.

How about focusing on bringing the beach back to a Nature area with Expat and Local Officials ENFORCING some real laws against Jet-ski's and Para-sailing !

Sure, why not but pay me a salary and issue the proper work permit. Don't expect me to do your job for free. Considering the amount of money tourism brings to Phuket, surely some of that money could be spent on the safety and wellbeing of the tourists.

Phuket tourism price structure certainly is not known to be fair and just. To expect volunteers to work for free is like a slap in my face.

Too bad those of us holding Non-Immigrant O-A (retirement) visas cannot volunteer.

Herbert- the Ironman and Triathlon rely on volunteers every year and there is always a huge turnout of 90 and 70 volunteers respectively. Some people are happy contributing to their community but I guess you will be absent at 7 am next month.

Cleaning Thailand lies with the Thailand people, firstly the Police that fail to enforce many things. A expat would be the last person to influence the jet-ski people and they could be putting the personal softy at risk.

@ Mister Ree

A sports event is totally different from asking people to work for free for . . . (moderated)

No interest in doomsaying, Herbert. The article is about volunteers working for the Department of Tourism and Sport.

@ Herbert - exactly! Foreign volunteers working gratis for any Thai government instrumentality (the police and immigration in particular) - don't seem to understand what the word 'exploitation' means.

When so many Thais are 'supposedly' out of work, surely such jobs should be offered to them first?

Are unpaid jobs in high demand?

Interesting that volunteers can "help protect tourists on the holiday island and to work in specific projects" without a work permit but volunteers can't help in an orphanage, for instance, without one. That said, I think it is a good suggestion. Locals and ex-pats have for the most part welcomed the clearance of "their" beaches and other efforts that should be beneficial to Phuket and tourists. Signing up for this initiative would demonstrate a greater pride in "their" Phuket. It's not a unique idea and is common where overstretched public resources are supplemented by local volunteers who have a vested interest in maintaining or even improving their quality of life.

@ Editor

Of course not but my last comment contained nothing that could be construed as such. Only a quote of the article and a subsequent question.

In the interest of getting a realistic view of what being on this type of "job" really means, it would be great if some expats who are or used to be in those positions could be interviewed. There's a lot more to it than most could imagine.
