PHUKET: Ten travel tour firms on Phuket have mediated a deal with a large Chinese-connected tour company that ran up unpaid debts of 40 million baht - and probably owes still more.
Thai Xin Ya Zhou Tour (Thailand) Co Ltd and the 10 Phuket firms agreed in talks today that debts under 100,000 baht would be settled in full while in the case of those greater than 100,000 baht, 30 percent of the debt would be repaid.
The debts under 100,000 baht will be paid today while Thai Xin Ya Zhou Tour has a week to pay the other reduced amounts owing.
The Phuket companies said it would be a mistake to close Thai Xin Ya Zhou Tour because the rerstructured company needed to repay its debt. More claims are expected to be made.
Representatives of the Tourist Police, the Royal Thai Navy and Santi Pawai, chief of the Ministry of Tourism and Sports and Director of the Business and Guide Registration Branch, sat in on today's mediation deal.
