Rates from the Koh Sireh taxi stand when it set up five years ago

Phuket Taxi Group Complains They've Been Cut Out of the Action

Monday, August 4, 2014
PHUKET: A group of taxi drivers from Koh Sireh, the small island east of Phuket City, complained today to the Damrugtam ombudsman's office about the destruction of their stand on public land.

About 25 taxi drivers had been operating from the stand outside the Westin Siray Bay Resort, since it opened five years ago.

Police and local councils destroyed taxi stands on public land in June as the military took over in Thailand and Region 8 police, along with local authorities, moved to give Phuket meter taxis and a full, international standard service.

The Westin is unable to accommodate the taxi drivers because it already has contracts in place.

According to locals on Koh Sireh, some of the drivers who manage the Westin rank are also in charge of the ranks at Robinson department store and Royal Phuket City hotel, both in Phuket City, and are not originally from Phuket.

The only option for those illegal taxi drivers will be to become a registered "Metered Taxi" and to start to work as all people around the world instead to sleep all day long in a sala opposite a resort waiting tourists to scam them.

With those prices what did they think was going to happen? It's why bike rentals are so popular on the island. Even a trip a day is 1000+ Baht in a tuk-tuk compared to only 200 or 300 for a bike.

If these people are looking for sympathy, then they are bang out of luck. They have run an unregulated & often abusive system that has at best annoyed people & at worst led to physical violence against not only 'farangs', but against fellow Thais. Their gravy train has just run dry.

It's the same with the jet skis - an article elsewhere states they want to service & save people! If you put it to the public vote, I am sure the percentage of persons who don't want them anywhere near the beaches, where people want peace & quiet to rest, swim, snorkel or dive, would far exceed the few that want to drive them recklessly endangering others.

Just make a GOvernment run Central Taxi booking number for all meter taxi's, make hotel and reception dial it by law.

Than diver gets fair business and things are taxed and run properly. Just like every country in the world does.

No scam, no over charging, no uninsured cars no unsafe cars, no bs from drivers or hotels. it is fair and no one has to sit still under a tree they can be busy all over the place, and the system can monitor who is good and who is bad who is lazy and who is working.

Many, many years, people can watch in morning and early evening 'train's' of jet skies transported through Patong. They ALL pass by the police station in Patong. No police officer stops them and fined them ever for this illigal transport activity according thai transport law. Checking on helmets of boys and girls is more easy, and brings in more money, yes?
