Operation Patong begins with task force raids aimed at taxi drivers

Phuket Task Force Begins Huge Strike Against Patong Taxi 'Mafia' and Suspected Supporters

Thursday, August 28, 2014
PHUKET: A massive anti-corruption task force led by soldiers and police began making raids before dawn today in a dramatic move aimed at crushing Phuket's taxi ''mafia'' and cleaning up underworld operations in the holiday hub of Patong.

Far larger than the strike in June that led to more than 100 arrests among taxi drivers and their alleged sponsors in the neighboring district of Kata-Karon, today's task force offensive targetted scores of drivers and entertainment businesses and the Patong officials who have allegedly benefitted from chronic corruption.

For more than a decade, tourists visiting Phuket have complained about the surliness and extortionate fares demanded by Patong taxi and tuk-tuk drivers. Now their bank accounts and tax records are about to be closely scrutised.

Soldiers from Region 4, the Royal Thai Navy, officials from the Tax Revenue Department, the Office of the Public Sector Anti-Corruption Commission, the Anti-Money Laundering Organisation and police from Bangkok moved across Phuket in a top secret strike led by Police Major General Paween Pongsirin, Commander of the General Staff Division of Police Region 8.

''We have been planning this second action since the Kata-Karon raids,'' he told Phuketwan. ''It's far bigger and much more comprehensive, with hundreds of officers involved in Thursday's strike.''

Months of careful planning came together yesterday with last-minute briefings for scores of team leaders being held at Phuket Police Station in Phuket City. Phuket Police Commander Major General Krajang Suwanarat gave final instructions, with Major General Paween at his shoulder.

In a room nearby, police have been covertly working for months on dossiers covering many aspects of Patong, but particularly taxi and tuk-tuk drivers and the bars and entertainment venues and their networks.

The courts issued arrest warrants and warrants to seize documents in advance of today's action. More than 80 warrants are thought to be involved.

Patong Superintendent Colonel Jirapat Palchanaphan, who oversees Kathu Police Station, was at yesterday's meetings.

His first-hand experience of the bullying power of the Patong taxi drivers includes blockades of the roads, extortion and intimidation.

It was time and I am curious to see if roads are mob - free from now on. Guess this time they won't have the guts to block the roads. But I hear them already crying: How do we feed our families ... ?
Illegal taxis should be seized, auctioned and the proceeds should be used for road construction in Patong.

Judgement Day. The time has come for the good guys to rise and for the bad guys to go down. The sky belongs to God and so does Patong.

The best news I've seen in the morning in a long time. As of yesterday I watched the surly JungCeylon Tuk-Tuk drivers treating the tourists with ugly comments (although most was in Thai it goes to their training and mindset!!)

At least something will happen to stop the Tuk Tuk mafia, get rid of 50% Of them from the streets of Patong, then the traffic jam will be redused, and it will be a better place to stay for the tourists.
Everybody I know says the same, stop this mafia, BIG thanks to the Task Force.

Fantastic! Up to this point, there has been no noticeable difference in the throngs clogging the sidewalks. I hope this rocks them to the core! Good job NCPO and all involved.

Please start now with the thaimafia conroling many condos, just stealing the income, refusing any control. Start in Pattaya. We have tried for years.

We never accept reader's dares, Smithy. They're far too childish.

I agree there are issues with Tuk-Tuk and taxis in Patong. Having said that I have never had an issue with volatile or unruly behaviour. Quite the opposite. I have always found drivers pleasant and friendly, though a little expensive at times. Ay Christmas my wife was wheelchair bound and everywhere we went the drivers repeatedly assisted up and down gutters and stopped traffic for us to cross the road. Yes issues, but there is always another side. Maybe some of the reactions are a reflection of the behaviour of the tourists who can treat locals as a lower class of servant. All for the clean up but do not completely write off all of the drivers as crooks and Mafioso.

Editor Comment:

Definitely not Mafia and there have been, as you say, many times when tuk-tuk drivers have proved their generosity with everything . . . except fares.
