Happy smile from Jonathan George with his passport back

US Student Pleased to Regain Passport

Friday, August 12, 2011
PHUKET: American Jonathan George has his passport back, thanks to an honest Phuket bus conductor and a sharp-eyed Phuketwan reader.

The tall Phuket student teacher is delighted, to put it mildly. He couldn't have afforded to get the document replaced easily on his tight student budget.

The general manager of the Phuket Provincial Administration Organisation's pink bus service in Phuket City, Somkiat Sriraksasin, handed the worn passport back to the smiling 23-year-old today.

''It's been through the wash a couple of times,'' he said. Even frayed at the edges, he was extremely keen to see it again.

''I went shopping at Big C on Wednesday then when I got off the bus with the shopping, I must have left my black carry bag behind,'' Mr George said.

''The pink bus service is great, you can get all over Phuket City for just a 10 baht fare, and I am so glad that the conductor cared enough to hand it in.''

Phuketwan published an article about the honest conductor, and a reader who works at the Phuket City TEFL (teaching English as a foreign language) school told Mr George that his luck was in.

The happy American and a group of friends were heading off today on a holiday boat trip from Chalong, south of Phuket City. At the end of the month, Mr George will begin looking for a job teaching, on Phuket if he can find one.

Do we still have to carry the original passport with us all the time, or is a certified photocopy ok?
I have been living here and still carry the original.

Thanks for the honest answers to come.

I usually carry my Thai Driving License. The ID-number of the DL contains my passport number, so it is easy to take down from a valid document to my entry in the immigration computer. And by the way, I was asked just once in 15 years to show my passport, at a check-point in Isaan. I just carry my passport on longer trips throughout the country, the risk of losing it is too high for me.

I yearn for the day when a an honest Thai isn't news.

And Graham, yes it is still law to keep your passport with you all times, also your work permit while you are working.

A copy will usually suffice though. I weigh the risks and I usually only take mine on long trips. If you have a Thai drivers license, that has your passport number on it.

You can even fly domestically without your passport if you have a Thai DL.

There was an article in a rival publication a few years ago in which a senior police officer stated that a copy of a passport was adequate for initial identification purposes. i carry a small laminated copy of both passports at all times. As pointed out below my Thai driving licence also comes in handy for ID purposes - if you are here long term its a document well worth having (and probably required if you have been driving on an IDP, which is only valid for a certain period). The driving licence is useful for smoothing the way in a lot of situations as it indicates you live here and may not be as gullible to some of the various shakedowns that can occur.

Thanks for the answers so far. I have two Thai drivers licences, only due to expire late 2015. One for a car and one for a motorbike.

I also use these to get around the double pricing system.
Any more answers and I will still be reading. Thank you and a safe weekend to you all.

Graham, you mention that you have 2 Thai licences due to expire in 2015. How were you able to get licenses that are good for more than 1 year? I have only been able to get 1 year 'temporary' licenses in my Thai locale. At the licensing office they tell me that since my retirement visa is only good for one year, I can only get the temporary license, not the 5 year long term license.

@Rick
When I did my licences I was on a Non B mutltiple-entry Visa and had a company.
I got the first licences for a year, then exactly the day after they expired, I went in to have them renewed. got the six year validity ones. This is on Phuket.
I still have my licences but have only been on my retirement visa for 15 days now.
Thank you I have made a note to check with my legal eagles about my licence.

"I yearn for the day when a an honest Thai isn't news".

This comment has bothered me since it was posted. It implies that honesty is any rarer a commodity here than anywhere else. Since the time of Diogenes the search for honesty among men has been ongoing. A small tweak to your comment would make me in full agreement. I yearn for the day when an honest "man" is not news.
