Barry Boubacar being interviewed by police on Phuket last night

Phuket Sting Nets African And Drugs for Sale to Tourists

Wednesday, May 9, 2012
PHUKET: An African arrested in sting operation on Phuket last night was allegedly selling ya ice methamphetamines to the holiday island's tourists, police said today.

Detectives from two Phuket stations busted Barry Boubacar, 39, about 7pm last night at the Baan Ton Sai 3 Hotel in Patong.

Officers allege he handed over 15 grams of ya ice in exchange for 37,500 baht in cash.

Later, at Mr Boubacar's room in the Classic House 2 Hotel, police say they found another 45 grams of ya ice.

Officers from Kathu station, which oversees Patong, and the neighboring Tungthong district carried out the sting operation after being told a black African man had been selling drugs to tourists.

Happy to read this news. I have no sympathy for either drug dealers or users.

Plenty of domestic drug dealers around, even in very high places as the latest cold pill scandal shows. Certainly no need to import any more dealers.

I prefer the Singaporean approach - their embarkation card reads cleary in red - DEATH PENALTY FOR DRUG DEALERS and airline crew are required to remind passengers of this prior to arrival in Singapore.

I'd fully support Thailand if they adopted that policy.

Not South African. There is a South African women in prison in Bangkok tho'. The one who tried to smuggle coke in her dreadlocks.

This is common enough in Bangkok on Sukhumvit at night. African guys opnely selling drugs & African hookers openly plying their trade free-lance on the main drag. I made a rare visit to Pattaya recently & it is visible there too, just not so common. Sadly now, it appears to be spreading to Phuket.

Footnote: However, there must be a demand or there would not be a supply!

To Steve C: I agree 100% with your sentiments.

However, on the many occasions I have flown into Singapore, it intrigued me that the warning was given on the plane - when it is already too late for such drug couriers - instead of at check-in at the airport of origin!

Its good that someone advised the police of his actions. The more people that dob these people in the better. Drugs are destroying most societies around the world. No problem with the death penalty.
