The loris being abused last night by a man arrested off Soi Bangla

Phuket Sex Shows, Loris Touts Unlimited by One Solitary Arrest

Wednesday, September 25, 2013
PHUKET: Slow lorises and iguanas were being abused by photo touts in Patong last night - although there was one more arrest of a loris tout early today.

A casual count of animals at 10pm gave a tally of seven lorises and eight iguanas. An hour later, a Phuketwan reporter was still able to count six lorises and two iguanas.

A brief holiday on Phuket by pop star Rihanna at the weekend produced a series of tweets and Instagram photos highlighting Phuket's sex freak shows and the continuing mistreatment of the lorises, a protected primate.

Corrupt payments are made to ensure that both illegal activities continue in Patong's Soi Bangla, with local police turning a blind eye.

Although the Minister for Tourism and Sport, Somsak Pureesrisak, said yesterday that investigators were looking at making arrests regarding the sex shows, touts were attracting an audience for them in Patong as usual last night.

The arrest of the loris tout came in Soi Crocodile, a lane of bars that runs off Soi Bangla, about 1am. Lieutenant Colonel Pongpichan Chayanonpiriya arrested Pichet Pimrat, 27, from Pitsanulok, and seized a loris.

Two touts were arrested at the weekend after Rihanna posted a ''selfie'' with one of the cuddly creatures on Instagram, where she has 9.7 million followers.

She also sent vulgar tweets of her experience on Phuket, including one that said: Either I was phuck wasted lastnight, or I saw a Thai woman pull a live bird,2 turtles,razors,shoot darts and ping pong, all out of her pu$$y

The photo and the tweets have ignited an international reaction with many Thais indignant that their country is being portrayed in such a poor way.

Hundreds of news outlets around the world have reported Rihanna's experiences, portraying Phuket as a tawdry, sleazy destination.

Animal activists on Phuket are endeavoring to set up a rescue centre for lorises, which cannot be returned to the wild because their canine teeth are snapped off by the touts.

National Geographic weighed in overnight, urging other tourists to note that the lorises are protected and to not follow Rihanna's example.

''There's a part of me that's upset, [but] in a weird sense, [it] helped bring the loris to public consciousness,'' the highly-regarded magazine quoted an anthropologist in the US as saying.

''Rihanna has a much larger following [than a person in the conservation community], The center of the story is that these people were arrested because this is a protected animal.

''That emphasises that these animals aren't something to be photographed with.''

And the swift negative backlash could aid in conservation efforts as well, National Geographic said. However, the magazine made not comment about the Soi Bangla sex shows.

Ed, I know you get upset when people say nothing will change but here we go again. It is good you report it, but will things change?

Nothing upsets me. Change will come for sure, FF. The only question is when. The choices for an answer are:

(a) when Thai authorities proactively clean up Phuket to prevent a tourism disaster caused by scams, sleaze and lack of service;

(b) when Thai authorities react, after a tourism disaster that they should have prevented from happening.

To whoever has the power to remove those touts, please look outside Bangla too, as yesterday 2 touts were working along 200 pee road with one loris and one iguana. With one man following nearby on a scooter. They were always looking over their shoulders though...
also i saw the regular ping pong touts flashing their laminated brochures right in front of the tourist police cars on bangla road, while the officers sat comfortably at the Pizza Company. . .

So Ed, finally you agree with me: soon they will have what they deserve... otherwise nothing will be change..

I have never agreed with 'dave the doomsayer' about anything. I also continue to find your use of the word ''they'' to be shameful bigotry. You've never added anything to this site.

One only needs to drive around Kata, Karon, Rawai after 10pm to see how quiet it is. I have never seen it so quiet. Whether this is to do with the European Crisis, the high Baht or Thailand's reputation is anyone's guess. I personally find animals being captured and living a grim life extremely abhorrent and Buddhism forbids it. Thailand being a Buddhist country makes Thailand look very low. Western countries are taking a more serious about animal cruelty than ever before so this also put some high quality tourists off coming to Thailand. Sex shows although I have never been and don't want to go, if animals are used is abhorrent but sex shows just using just people and objects I have nothing against if strict rules are applied so that staff and customers are over 20 years old and only at night. Thailand is a beautiful country with a deep history, do they really want to be known for sex, sex shows and animal touts. Sadly like in the West money is the modern day cure for everything in so many people's mind. I am a capitalist but here in Thailand I have never seen so many obsessed with money and I have been to Europe, The Middle East, US, Caribbean, Africa, SE Asia and Australia so have seen many different cultures. Saying that though I am very impressed how safe Phuket is compared to violent so called developed countries.

Well stand up & be counted. Put pressure on your government & authorities to stamp out what you don't like. Don't leave it to 'farangs' to do your dirty work. Or is it the case that you take the dirty money when it suits & grump about your image when it doesn't?

I have been up country enough to know that families get 'upset' when they discover their daughters (& in some cases their sons or 'in-betweens') have percolated to 'work' in Pattaya & Phuket, but they quickly get over it when the money starts to flow. They soon adjust their life style to the new income with houses, cars & motorbikes. Then they grump when the money stops!

@Logic
I have lived up country for the best part of 3 years and I have never come across a single family in our village or surrounding villages whose daughter has percolated to 'work' in Pattaya or Phuket. Most girls work in local banks and shops and many go to the big city (Khon Kaen) to work in department stores on a 21 days work 7 days off schedule. Girls here have their pride.

@Pete Khon Kaen is one of the most common places for ladies to have originated from along with Ubon Thani, the latter always seem to have about 4 men they are lying to. Morals in that part of the world seem to have got lost some where, but then I guess we only see the ones that have problems coming here. However you can still be poor and have class and pride, these girls are totally self centered. Just yesterday I was looking at a dating site and she had many pictures having directed users to Instagram and she was by a kangaroo, so I said if you are with a man who has taken you to Australia why are you on a dating site asking men to contact you. As said I am sure there are good people but a lower percentage. That's why a lot of the Isarn girls say they are from BKK.

I just came back from Bangla. At 1 PM I saw 5 man gathering on the sidewalk each one with a slow Lories + 1 man with a Iguana.(I do not know if the spelling is correct) So difficult to "Catch" them ? The main issue is the corruption, that has to be fixed first. I felt very disappointed and sad when I saw all of them

Fiesty Farang:
Yes, I guess you've been playing around with a few toys while you view dating sites. I wasn't aware of Isarn girls saying they come from Bangkok, but you seem to know better as you're probably single and have the time to look for promiscuous ladies. I'm afraid I don't have your vast knowledge of the red light areas of Khon Kaen.
By the way it's either Ubon Ratchatani or Udon Thani - you're all mixed up!

The case of the lories would have been definitely helped if someone would have arrested Riri for talking dirty to this minor monkey.

I just read that the chief police superintendent "hadn't received any orders yet" to crack down on the ping-pong shows.
Eh...how come a policeman needs orders to crack down on criminals who break the law?
And from whom...

@Remarkable
The big problem, here: You never know, who's involved in the business and who's ass you try to kick. So you wait, till someone else takes responsibility and tells you, it's ok, to do. For now.
