PHUKET: A team of Phuket people has returned from a road show to India, confident that more travellers will come to Phuket in the future as a result.
The PATA Travel Mart from September 6-9 attracted representatives from 13 Phuket resorts as well as 625 package providers and 302 agents. That represented an increase of 105 representatives from 14 new countries, taking the number represented to 30.
''We were reassured that Phuket is viewed as a destination attracting growing interest,'' said Bhuritt Maswongssa, vice president of the Phuket Tourism Association. The figures for travel from the region are mixed, but trending up.
Almost 750,000 Indians visited Thailand in 2010, up 25 percent on 2009. Af those people, 40,319 visited Phuket, up 17.25 percent on the previous year. Saudi Arabia, Bahrain and other Middle east countries also showed strong increases.
While the Phuket group was in New Delhi, a terrorist bomb exploded at the Supreme Court, there was a 6.7 earthquake and severe flooding.
