Phuket's most venerable monk, Luang Pu Supha, arrives today

Phuket Ritual to Dispel Bad Dream of 'Black Smoke'

Monday, May 16, 2011
A SPECIAL ceremony was organised today to bring Phuket good fortune, Phuket Governor Tri Augkaradacha said as the ceremony began.

He said Phuket's most remarkable monk, the 114-year-old Luang Pu Supha, had mentioned a dream in which he saw Phuket ''covered in black smoke.''

Luang Pu Supha was among those at the special ceremony at Sala Prachakom, opposite the Governor's House in Phuket City. Phuketwan was present when the illustrious monk, credited with establishing 30 temples throughout Thailand, arrived for the ceremony.

Monks and nuns from all over Phuket gathered with Buddhist adherents dressing mostly in white to mark the eve of Visakha Buja day, one of the most sacred days in the Buddhist calendar.

Ceremonial triangular trays of food, each decorated with colorful flags, were prepared to be blessed and distributed to all parts of Phuket to invite the gods to protect all of the island.

Luang Pu Supha, who visited Indonesia last year with one monk as a companion, turns 115 in September.

In recent years he founded the Luang Pu Supha temple at Chalong in southern Phuket, where construction continues on a large circular memorial that will be his final resting place.

Many years earlier Luang Pu Supha also established temples at Koh Sireh, east of Phuket City, and Kao Rang, on the hill in Phuket City of the same name.

Just when you think this country is moving forward, new elections to be held, democracy given another chance, a story like this appears and you realise there is no hope.

Superstitions, old wives tales, folklore, fortune tellers and now "bad dreams" is what makes the headlines.

Anyone for chicken bones and a bit of voodoo?

Ever heard of Y2K? How's that for superstition? As for portents based on dreams, are you aware of things called futures markets? Superstitions, old wives tales, folklore, fortune tellers - and especially bad dreams - trouble everyone, everywhere. Cultural superiority complexes are far more worrying.

Sorry Mike, I don't agree with you. Look at how many superstitions westerners have, spilt salt, cracked mirrors, brooms, black cats, veils for brides (these keep evil spirits away!) the list is endless. Anywhoozleberry what makes anyone think our personal beliefs are any better than our neighbors?

Mike, that's why they call them "cultures", they have beliefs and traditions, philosophies and histories all their own. If you want things here to be like your home, they never will be.

Remember, your avatar Vincent Vega got wasted by Butch, because he didn't catch on to what Jules was on about when those bullets missed him.

If His Holiness wants to see black smoke, just send him round to my neighborhood where the rubbish fires are burning non-stop this week. No more dining on the veranda for us, and we are considering investing in an oxygen tank or two to facilitate breathing. Or perhaps just pack it all in and get out.

Thank you for reporting this. I only wish next time it could be reported before the event takes place. I would have loved to join and catch a glimpse of this legendary monk!!!!

You can catch a glimpse of Luang Pu Supha most days at the Luang Pu Supha temple in southern Phuket. If he is awake, he usually greets visitors. Otherwise, he can be seen through glass windows as he sleeps.

"He can be seen through glass windows as he sleeps."

Like the panda bears at Chiang Mai Zoo! They even have a 24 hour cable channel so you can observe them all hours of the day or night.

Y2K? That's a good one! Working in the computer business, I knew that was a load of baloney spread about by people - my company included - who could make a packet out of system updates.

Futures markets? Is that where the chicken bones and voodoo comes in?

Sorry, Ed, I don't believe in any of that stuff, or "pee" - ghosts - which makes for interesting conversations with the wife and in-laws!

"Cultural superiority complex"? Well, now that you mention it...
