Phuket Rider Killed as Motorcycle Misses Big Buddha Curve

Wednesday, May 21, 2014
PHUKET: A man was killed and his passenger seriously injured when a motorcycle failed to take a curve on the descent from Phuket's famous Big Buddha yesterday.

Rescuers found the man and his companion downhill from the curve, with the motorcycle continuing to plunge for about 100 metres about 4.30pm.

The man, Chaiya Teton, 37, who was wearing a helmet, was killed instantly. His companion, a woman, was taken to Vachira Phuket Hospital in Phuket City in a serious condition.

In the worst crash on the Big Buddha road in 2011, five Burmese were killed when their pickup slammed into a tourist vehicle.

I am amazed that there are not more deaths on this hill, I have seen daily crazy racing up and down the hill by tourists and young workers on ATV's. I saw a large truck overtake on the blind corner were the Burmese were killed and one day an ATV with two large tourists drove right off the side of the hill and were very lucky a tree stopped them from serious injuries. I have watched crazy tourists on ATV's drive fast and loudly around the tourists riding elephants and now with the addition of Dune Buggies Big Buddha hill is a death trap waiting for it's next set of victim.

Will the police finally act against the ATV which illegally operate on this road? They are the start of Phuket's next Jetski type problem.

Fiesty Farang, dying is not fun

Suchada, FF is one of those who see the sex trade, over indulgence in drugs and alcohol and general lawlessness as fun, everyone has their own definition of "fun." As for "dying" not being fun, well, I have yet to hear one complaint, from those that have died.

FF, you really need to grow up and accept that without law enforcement society descends into anarchy, is this what you want? It is people like who that reinforce my theory on some expats, who are outcasts i their own country, whose lives are those who oppose societies rules/laws, often coming into conflict with the law, and come to Thailand to live their less constrained lives.

Any death on the roads is very sad and more should be done for road safety. I agree that road safety should be improved especially in areas like that road which is known to be dangerous and also testing for drink driving after midnight with mandatory jail. Sadly road laws are rarely enforced and penalties are minor, no points even on a license if the rider/driver has a license.

Not all are the same Laurie.
