PHUKET: Rescue techniques were put to the test on Phuket yesterday with the simulated recovery of 16 ''tourists'' from a boating incident off Kata beach.
Under the gaze of senior officials from the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation, a speedboat and a jet-ski with a sled were used to pluck the ''tourists'' from the sea and bring them back to shore.
The Orbortor hospital, Royal Thai Navy region 3, the Kata-Karon longtails association, the Kusoldharm Foundation, local beach people, and lifeguards all took part.
Close to the event were three Japanese tourists enjoying the beach if not the water, probably comforted by the beach safety activity nearby.
