Phuket Ranked Among Top Destinations for 'Working Remotely'

Wednesday, February 25, 2015
PHUKET: Quirks of the internet appear to rank Phuket and three other destinations in Thailand among the top cities in the world in which to work remotely.

Chiang Mai ranks first, followed by Bangkok, Phuket, and Pai. Prague is close to the top, too.

The list is compiled by NomadList, a site created by an Amsterdam-based entrepreneur named Pieter Levels, who ranks the best cities around the globe in which to live and work online.

He scores cities on a variety of different parameters, including monthly cost of living, transportation, internet speed, safety and density of wifi-connected coffee shops.

Describing Chiang Mai's charms, NomadList cites the cost of living at the equivalent of 21,600 baht a month with a warm climate and shared working spaces available for rent at an average of 3600 baht a month.

''Chiang Mai is known for its cafe culture, with many places offering free wifi and good air conditioning. Average wifi speed is 20Mbps. The city has an active blogging community, and many Asia-based freelancers come here when needing some space to finish projects. A basic meal will set you back 1.30 pounds. Rent for a one bedroom apartment in the city is 205 pounds,'' the article reads.

Of Phuket, Thailand's most expensive province, the article says:

''Cost of living: 664 pounds a month

Another place in Thailand completes the top 3. Phuket, the country's largest island, is one of Thailand's most popular tourist destinations. A basic meal costs 1.30 pounds and you're bound to have warm weather, with temperatures of around 30C all year round. However, free WiFi availability is given just 2 stars out of 5, and speed is 20Mbps.''

The accompanying photograph is from the neighboring province of Phang Nga.

Hmm, why the slower bandwidth in Phuket?

Same speed, less free availability

Well one thing that makes it cheap will be the fact that very few if any will be paying any taxes.

@ J- why the slow bandwidth? Obvious isn't it - Phuket is the 'Internet Hub' of Thailand, honest- coz they said so!

Editor Comment:

If the photograph that accompanies the section on Phuket is actually taken from Phang Nga, one should treat the content with scepticism.

There are indeed a huge number of digital nomads in Chiang Mai, catering to their needs has become a little industry itself.
