Phuket Public to Decide About Chalong Circle Underpass at Final Meeting

Thursday, July 31, 2014
PHUKET: A final public meeting on August 6 should give impetus for the Chalong Circle underpass project to begin construction, Phuket's top roads official said today.

''The meeting will be held at the Metropole in Phuket City from 9am to noon,'' said Phuket's Director of Roads department, Somsak Lerdwonghat.

A nine-million-baht study produced three potential outcomes for pushing traffic through the often-criticised bottleneck junction in southern Phuket.

Emerging as the leading contender is a two-way, one-kilometre-long underpass between Chao Fa West Rd and Viset Rd, beneath the existing roundabout.

Such a long tunnel would take 30 months and probably lead to considerable angst on the part of commuters.

Construction would cost 700 million, Khun Somsak said. ''We hope the construction company will quickly be able to confirm their suggested diversions around the circle during digging and building,'' he said.

Meanwhile, the Central Festival Phuket underpass is 78 percent complete, with electricity, lights, fans and pumps still to be installed and the completion date of September likely to be achieved.

The Tesco Lotus underpass just a kilometre away down the bypass road artery has encountered a problem in the form of an unmapped water drain that will impede construction and require a major diversion.

Talks are taking place with Phuket Provincial Waterworks Authority. The authority has been asked to organise a new arrangement but with the underpass 30 percent complete, a delay of at least two months seems likely.

It would be cheaper to buy up the property near the roundabout and make a Proper roundabout for probably 25% of the cost they propose.
The actual design is why it doesn't work, then of course educating people on how to use a roundabout would also help.

This will take 30 months to complete and
Phuket's Director of Roads department, Somsak Lerdwonghat hopes there will be suggestions on how commuters can avoid the work. He obviously doesn't live in Rawai.
Underpasses are obviously the Roads Dept answer to everything even though overpasses seem cheaper, quicker to build, less disruptive, with no flooding issues and are no more of an eyesore than the hideous 3 storey billboards at Chalong right now ...and construction period wouldn't be extended by some amazing discovery of pipes like at the Tesco Lotus roadworks.

I seem to remember from previous reports that the lead contender was from Chao Fah East to Viset.
Has something changed, or is my memory faulty?

Could be. We will find out all at the public meeting.

The area in front of Villa mart suffers from severe flooding, so a tunnel is a bad idea. An overpass would be much less disruptive and would not be prone to flooding, or problems during power-out.

And that is going to cause no disruption at all of course. When is somebody going to tell them flyovers are more cost effective, quicker to build with less hassle and don't flood.

30 months of roadworks will be an absolute nightmare for anyone living in Rawai, Chalong, Karon and Kata. An underpass is a dreadful idea in that location.

You can go from any of the five roads to any other without having to go through the circle. It isn't convenient, but, it is possible.

The reason they will try and chose a tunnel, is that it is more expensive, and a larger kickback. Better the Army take over these contracts, or better yet, use the army engineering corps, and volunteered labour. Probably get it done a few months for a fraction of the price .

An overpass could create 2 more roads and the costrucion will not a nightmare like an underpass. Did someone see underpass in Bangkok??

Yesterday evening rush hour, traffic police stood by to ensure everyone gave way, and the traffic flowed like a river ! (As opposed to stopping all lanes except one until clear/stuck.) Tbs is correct. Enforce traffic laws, educate drivers that giving way will be faster in the long run, and if possible, buy some of the surrounding land to make it bigger. Simple. Roundabouts are self-regulating (if drivers give way).
