The policeman, a married father of a young child, had finished a shift and was on his way in heavy rain about 4.30am to visit a policeman friend in Chalong, further south on Phuket.
The car left the road and hit the pole on a sweeping bend between Patong and Karon, not far from Le Meridien Phuket Beach Resort.
