Jantara Jiamnansilp recovers after being kicked from her motorcycle

Phuket Police Nab Necklace Snatcher Before He Can Cash In

Monday, November 17, 2014
PHUKET: A man who snatched a gold necklace from a woman and kicked her from her motorcycle was arrested in just over two hours by police on Phuket this afternoon.

Pongchai Wongwan, 29, who installs ceilings for a living, was taking a day off and worried about his motorcycle repayments, according to Phuket City Police.

On the spur of the moment while riding through Saphan Hin, he snatched the necklace from Jantara Jiamnansilp, 45, kicking her off her motorcycle and speeding on his way.

Police from Phuket City were so quick to alert all of the island's gold shops that when he walked into a store in Rassada district about 12.30pm and accepted an offer of 16,200 baht for the necklace, store staff were able to call police who quickly arrived and arrested Khun Pongchai.

Khun Jantara suffered facial wounds when she hit the roadway and the police are likely to take the motorcycle-kicking into account when charges are formally laid.

OMG to get such injuries on the face and bones just because of one XXXXXXX necklace..

About Khun Ponchai, the question is whether he is able to earn a living salary(or income), assuming he doesn't misspend on drugs etc.
On one side, Thai economy by is sick in the part that there are too many unskilled/semis skilled jobs, which Thais can't fill, but millions of guest workers, and that bring that cheap-cheap sweet feeling for consumers in all sectors.
This disproportionate share and number of unskilled/semiskilled jobs need to be cut in order to allow Thai to move from what is called by term "middle-income trap" -the current level of GDP per capita that is below developed countries , but way above poor countries.
More jobs that require higher level of education and skills have to be created, it means structural shift in the Thai economy from labour - intensive industries - yes, yes, away from tourism too : one will never earn enough by cleaning rooms and WCs, but the remaining tourist sector is likely to become both more expensive and offering lower ration if number of staff per guest.

Guest workers eventually may return home, as e.g.Myanmar economic perspectives of growth are much brighter than that of Thailand, many huge, large or big investment projects are underway, so many jobs will be created.

Khun Phongchai may be not helped by efficient public transport network if that would exist as for his job he obviously have to transport tools and materials by at least bike , so he normally should be able to charge for his works more to get a higher income - but price pressure from guest workers probably doesn't allow him that.

Thai youth has little incentive to get better education now as the country overall is cleptocratic society , not meritocractic one that value who you are not whom you know.

But either government intervention with particular policies meant to shrink labour-intensive industries or marker forces if workers from Myanmar will start to return home as there are jobs created there, need to take a place to cure this disease of Thai economy, and in general deprive a regular citizen of economic opportunity - unless he is willing and able to play in accordance with Cleptocracy game rules or go criminal way.
