The honorary consul for Norway, Pornphan Sittichaivijit, at today's meeting

Phuket Police Have Been Helping Phi Phi Rapists Avoid Investigation, Says Honorary Consul

Tuesday, April 21, 2015
PHUKET: Rapists have been getting away with their crimes - especially on the rites-of-passage holiday island of Phi Phi - because police on Phuket have refused to investigate, a meeting between honorary consuls and Phuket's Governor heard today.

Norway's honorary consul, Pornphan Sittichaivijit, told the gathering that young tourists were the victims of rape on Phi Phi.

Brought to Phuket to have physical examinations at Vachira Phuket Hospital, the victims had been told by Phuket City police that they would have to journey back to Ao Nang in Krabi, to pursue the issue of whether a rape had been committed with Krabi police.

Phi Phi was in the province of Krabi, not Phuket, the alleged rape victims were told.

''Many of the victims of rape on Phi Phi are extremely young tourists,'' Khun Pornphan said. ''How can we ensure that police pursue these cases, no matter where they occur?''

It is believed rape cases are often abandoned because women who say they have been victims are given the run-around by reluctant police.

Although there are now more women police in Thailand's force, it often appears as if rape is not considered an especially serious crime.

The representative from Phuket Police Headquarters said that he would ''guarantee'' allegations of rape committed on Phi Phi would be thoroughly investigated by police on Phuket if necessary from now on.

Just a few members of the media attended today's meeting. Some outlets are expected to publish the reporting of the PR team from Phuket Provincial Hall.

An earlier version had the incorrect name of the honorary consul.

Sad to say I think the Norwegian consul is correct. There is a lot of alchol on youth parties and rape is common. The police is reluctant to investigate in order to avoid problems with politicians who want Thailand to be picture perfect. Tourists should get information about the risks and how it can be avoided. Problems has to be resolved, if not charter tour companies will drop Thailand as a tourist destination.

The money is what matters, eh anonymous? Not justice?

The allegation is just the thin edge of the wedge. Pity that.

Rape is a serious crime. However it take is not easy to get rapist convicted. The burden of proof require medical exams and sign affadavids from witnesses. With sufficent evidence they will get justice in the courts in Thailand. However as the Norwegian consul pointed out it seems someone try to cover up the tragedies. I belive it is fear of loosing tourism revenues. We have seen this in murder cases and suspicius deaths too. The victims family have to struggle for years to get closer to the truth.I have three daughters. I would not allow them to go backpacking or partying in Asia. The embassies has a duty to provide their citizens of dangers and talk to Thai officials about their concerns. The Chinese is very sensitive in security issues and they do not hesitate to issue travel advisory to their citizens. For expats living in Thailand we have nearly no problems because we now how to reduce risk and how to behave.

Many rape victims are reluctant to report assault/rape as they know that their names will often appear in parts (not all) of Thai media. This have happened too many times in the past. BTW, the picture is of Khun Pornphan Sittichaivijit - the Honorary Consul to Norway for Southern Thailand).

Wow, a blow in the face of the Phuket police force. I am not surprised. Recently there was a poll in a Phuket newspaper on internet--> ..Do you trust the police? .. There was a overwhelming majority number of voters who not trust the thai police.

Maybe it is a reflection of the attitude of Thai society on tourists.

Rape is still not considered a crime by some machismo types everywhere, Paul. Do not forget that approximately half of Thai society consists of females. I doubt they agree with your theory.

I was wrong to use the words 'Thai Society' ed I had meant to convey that in the tourist areas it appears that the attitude of officials towards foreigners is not always helpful

Pornphan Sittichaivijit this lady stands up to powerful people, well done. Perhaps if she was given more power Thailand's laws would be implemented not only rape but the numerous other laws that are law but rarely enforced. Changing the subject I do notice that many 50kms speed limit signs have been erected lately which is a step forward as at the very least it reminds people there are limits.
