Phuket Outrigger Resorts Tap Russian Market With Moscow Agency Deal

Wednesday, January 14, 2015
PHUKET: Outrigger Resorts has opened a sales, marketing and PR representation office in Russia, effective January 1, 2015.

Moscow-based Travel Media is now responsible for Outrigger sales, representation, marketing, PR and travel industry relations in Russia and the CIS countries, which currently include Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Moldova, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan.

Travel Media Holding was established in 2005 and has a Moscow office of 40 personnel highly experienced in sales, representation, PR, organising travel industry roadshows and putting together travel industry buyer delegations.

The Russia office of Outrigger will report to Mark Simmons, Outrigger VP Sales & Marketing, Asia-Pacific.

''The opening of the Russia office adds another key market in Outrigger Resorts' move to become the premier beachfront resort brand in the world,'' said Simmons.

''Over the last few years, an increasing number of Russian holidaymakers and families have enjoyed the unique Outrigger Resort experience.

''It's a relationship that our new office in Moscow will nurture and grow.''

On the Russian economy, Simmons added: ''Outrigger is aware of the issues and is taking a proactive position based on a long-term, strategic view.''

Elena Vetrova, General Director of Travel Media Holding, said: ''Travel Media strongly believes that the variety of iconic beachfront resorts from Mauritius through Asia Pacific to Hawaii that Outrigger offers will be a perfect fit for Russian sun seekers.

''Based on our in-depth experience of the Russian market, that is the positive message we will be taking to the travel industry and travel consumers in Russia and the CIS market place.''

According to the latest available statistics from various sources, around 500,000 Russians visit Phuket in Thailand annually.

Phi Phi Island in Thailand attracts about 80,000, the Maldives 70,000, Mauritius 22,000, and Hawaii 24,000. Outrigger has resorts in all those destinations.

The World Travel and Tourism Council says Russia's GDP will average growth of 4.8 percent between 2011 and 2020.

In addition to Russia and the CIS countries, Outrigger now has representation offices in China, Korea, Japan, Australia, UK, France, Germany, Thailand and the United States.

Shame on Outrigger! The chain is Hawai'i based - and Hawai'i would ostracize Dr. Kelly if he encouraged the Russian market in Hawai'i. So why do we have to put up with people who do not smile in the "Land Of Smiles"?

I've been couple of times to the local Outrigger after re-branding, and most of tourists there were Europeans, then North Americans, then Bangkokians, and then quite a small proportion of Russians, and few other nationalities. The resort was quite packed.

I wonder whether they worked out this marketing strategy long time ago, before Russian rouble plunge evaporated also target audience of the Outrigger - which is not so cheap, but still significantly cheaper that the very top like Banyan Tree or Four Seasons.

Economic predictions from the likes of Goldman Sachs sees oil dropping into the $40 a barrel range and staying low for long period. Russian economy is up to 70% oil (energy) based. The Ruble which used to be a 34 rubles per USA $ is now ranging 65 rubles to the dollar and fluctuates to 70-75 rubles It has basically doubled. I find it odd that any efforts are taking place at all to link this resort to the Russian tourist industry, which is on the verge of collapse. The Russians you see in Thailand presently pre-booked their tours or tickets before the 'Crash"-Tourism. Thailand will just have to hobble on without our 'Russian Friends"
