Phuket Still Needs Lee Kuan Yew Touch

Phuket Still Needs Lee Kuan Yew Touch

Monday, March 23, 2015
PHUKET: Lee Kuan Yew probably would have had a ball taking charge of Phuket and solving all its problems.

This was the Phuketwan daydream - to have the founder of Singapore step in to fix the holiday island's corruption, the public transport issues and end the scams and rip-offs.

It's fitting that his death comes with Singapore about to celebrate its 50th anniversary and the imminent arrival of the Asean Economic Community.

Within a couple of years, if the large flaws on Phuket have not been solved in Lee Kuan Yew fashion, the island will languish at the opposite end of the spectrum compared to Singapore and success.

Just imagine how bright Phuket's future would be without corruption, with a proper public transport system, and with a strategy for the future that struck a balance with nature.

Authorities on Phuket dither and fuss about the small things while the big issues never get the attention they deserve. Thailand is different and, beyond Phuket, better-placed to deal with the future.

For all its obvious appeal, Phuket and the Andaman suffer from the lack of imagination and courage that inspired Lee Kuan Yew to stop the rot in Singapore and achieve economic wonders.

It's true that Singaporeans sacrificed some freedoms to achieve prominence on the global stage. But those freedoms now appear to be gradually being returned.

Phuket, on the other hand, delivers more freedoms than most people want, including the freedoms to seize public land, to charge the world's highest taxi fares, to build on top of canals and to divert national park entry fees into private pockets.

We won't even touch on human trafficking, one of humankind's most despicable crimes, and still flourishing north and south of Phuket.

It really is time Phuket's administrators were imbued with the spirit of Lee Kuan Yew. Forget about compromise.

Sort right from wrong with speed and make sure the corrupt money now flowing into private hands is diverted into education and health.

Punish those who defy you. Make Phuket a place we can all be proud to call home.

To explain what we mean, we've returned to a series of articles looking at Lee Kuan Yew's potential legacy for Phuket.

The influential Thais are making far too much money from Phuket to allow any change.

Singapore is the only nation in SE Asia to be free of corruption - and the most prosperous. It's about time Thailand realised the two are connected.

It's time also dear ED to become realist.. it will never happen.. Singapore was born without corruption, Phuket was instead founded on corruption, like south Italy on mafia: impossible to eradicate!

Ah, it's dave the doomsayer. He doesn't want anything to change. He doesn't believe it happens. Poor, miserable dave. Singapore is, of course, still a fishing village.

"Singapore is the only nation in SE Asia to be free of corruption"?

What about Hong Kong?

Look at a map please, dressa. Hong Kong is in China, not SE Asia.

Perfect title. Indeed Phuket does. The good news it is still possible to make some serious and much needed improvements, but as time passes the actions required are going to need to be more radical.. until perhaps it can no longer happen.

C'mon Phuket... you have to fight for yourself as the authorities are not yet willing to fight for you.

Many basic errors. ASEAN not Asean, it's an acronym in it. Thailand spends a higher percentage of GDP on education than Australia, The USA and Germany. Singapore is far from being corruption free. Last year the Assistant director of the Corrupt Practices Investigation Bureau Edwin Yeo was sentenced to ten years in prison. No wonder journalism is at an all time low. Get a grip Alan.

Total rubbish as usual, gee. The style on Phuketwan and many other publications is Asean because it's pronounced as a word. Learn a bit about the real world, please. The point the article is that the money that goes on corruption should be spent on health and education. Standards elsewhere have no bearing. I certainly won't be wasting my time on your education again. A dunce.

How can you even begin to think that Phuket will ever be comparable to Singapore? Just look at the garbage, education, police, traffic law enforcement, drugs, etc... If you, Ed, still look at Phuket with pink glasses on,that's fine for me.But the reality is in our face, whether you like it or not.

Have to start somewhere. Phuket is about the same size geographically but of course, it will never be quite like Singapore. Nobody thinks that it will.

Indeed a great leader is needed to take Phuket out of the darkness it has found itself in.

I had really hoped the army might have made improvements but sadly many of there ideas have disappeared into thin air.

So Singaporeans sacrificed some of their freedoms. So what? Phuketwan's ideal for Phuket is an island nation that does not enjoy democracy? Well, Phuket is half the way there with a military government and promises of returning democracy some time in the future. Why bother? Just adopt the Singapore model?

Singapore is an amazing blend of British/Chinese culture getting together to make progress same in HK where from virtually no modern facilities just 50 years ago (not sure about HK) it is now so modern and extremely wealthy (has a S$1000 (Approx $730) note) Having been there at least 20 times the financial district is like London, the public transport system is clean and air conditioned amazing cars are so expensive but upmarket models are common.

A romantic thought indeed. If Phuket was corruption free, it would be heaven on earth.

A very exceptional statesman, who enforced his visions with persistence, patience and consequence.

Just think how he accomplished english language for all within a few years, although none of the ethnic groups were native english speaker.

All the many internationals living there, peacefully and equitably, are educated and forward-looking. No xenophobia. Respect!

Who ever was in Singapore, will ask himself whether democracy is really the best of all polity or not.

Phuket has the most expensive Taxis in the world? Well I guess you've never been to Switzerland.

This could re-stoke the debate on Phuket having an elected official at the top (Governor) and some kind of special administrative status for the province a la Chonburi. Personally I'm not convinced this will deliver many tangible positive results for Phuket, but a change from the current model and status quo is desperately needed if Phuket is to progress to a corruption-free province with a healthy future.

Public transport and scam/rip-offs..
We all are 'wish full thinking'.
However, look at the public transport, blue or pink 'busses'. It are all old trucks/lorries converted into 'busses' with small wooden benches, anno 1 century ago. Where is the government to start to sett up a good sufficient buss system like Singapore has? Phuket is rich enough to handle that. ( remember, always we read about attracting quality tourists). Phuket, prove to be able to sett up a good bus infra structure. Of course the busses in such new structure not stop riding at 6 PM!
About scams/rip-offs ( corruption), well, outcome of a recent thai survey amoung thai university students (the future pride of Thailand) showed that 'a bit' corruption is ok. 'A bit' was not specified or rated.

Editor Comment:

The Phuket City ''pinkie'' buses are very efficient and low-cost, targetting just the people who need to be persuaded to get off motorcycles. Larger buses were tried but they caused too many traffic problems.
