Phuket's beautiful Kata beach: mystery surrounds tourist's death

Phuket Mystery As Tourist Dies After Kata Swim

Sunday, December 13, 2009
A YOUNG tourist from Russia has died in unusual circumstances after going for a swim at Phuket's popular Kata beach yesterday.

Andrey Khabrin, aged 37, enjoyed a dip in the water with his wife and a cousin, who was their travelling companion.

Police Lieutenant Anukul Nuket of Chalong Police Station told Phuketwan that officers were called to Kata beach by members of a charitable foundation based at Kata-Karon about noon yesterday.

Mr Khabrin returned to his beach lounger after the swim, police were told. He then went into an unusual state, with his arms rigidly outstretched and his eyes rolled back, they were told.

White discharge appeared on his lips.

Doctors in Intensive Care at Patong Hospital attempted to restart his heart, but to no avail.

It fell to Police Lieutenant Weerapong Rakkito from Kathu Police Station to investigate the death.

He said there were no marks on Mr Khabrin. Police are waiting for Mr Khabrin's wife to determine what will be done with his body.

It's look like the same symptom as the Swedish tourist who died (Jan Mirael Viltfors) at Racha Yai Island on Tuesday, December 8, 2009.

Terrible. However who knows what medical conditions he had before.

Is there really doctors at Patong Hospital now?

Is there really a charitable foundation in Kata Karon? Which one?

How long did it take for an ambulance to get to him?

I have seen people bleeding in the streets for an hour waiting for an ambulance. And this is at 2am when there is no traffic.

Last time I called one it took 20 minutes and this was from Koktanode road in Kata to the nearly the view point in Kata Noi.

I called the Karon Fire Dept. Directly and it should be noted that they do have an ambulance there 076 330 913.

I think someone else had called 191 but in my experience they can take over 30 min to come.

Best bet to call both however I wonder if he could have been saved if he had received medical help in time.
