PHUKET: A gang of Burmese with residents' cards to live and work in Thailand stole motorcycles at the rate of four or five a night on Phuket to sell back in Burma (Myanmar), police said today.
Three men and a woman were presented to the Phuket media today by Phuket Police Commander Major General Pachara Boonyasit, who has vowed since taking on the role to make Phuket safe and secure for tourists and residents.
The gang admitted to stealing 200 motorcycles, the commander said, stealing them on Phuket and riding them through Tachatchai checkpoint one by one in the early hours of the morning.
Others in the network would then ride the motorcycles further north to the Thai-Burma port of Ranong, where stolen machines would fetch 20,000 to 30,000 baht, Major General Pachara said.
The leader of the gang, Cheer Chit Ua, 29, admitted to stealing the motorcycles and to a previous term in jail for the same offence.
