The mayors and local leaders gather in private at a Phuket resort

Phuket Mayors Join Governor's Team to Play for Phuket United

Thursday, November 13, 2014
PHUKET: There's a new team taking the field on Phuket and it's called Phuket United. The coach is Governor Nisit Jansomwong, and he's giving some strikers a chance.

Their aim is to score as many goals as possible for Phuket, and the early indications are they'll win a few key matches.

In a wise move, the first we hope of many, Governor Nisit assembled the mayors and the district chiefs of Phuket at a resort earlier this week for a casual and private get-together.

What the governor wants the mayors to do is to compare notes at similar meetings around the island once a month. To raise the problems they might have, and to seek sensible solutions.

Judging from the first outing, Phuket United has shown the capacity for solid teamwork. Some mayors agreed ''oh, that's something we've been looking at, too'' and conversations swung towards mutual resolutions.

The creation of a Phuket Beach Authority is something Phuketwan has been advocating for years as the only way to solve Phuket's prime tourist attractions from the lack of sensible decision-making by the many councils who have a say.

Provided the mayors prove capable of implementing the same decisions and that those decisions are cohesive and sensible, then there could be no further need for a Phuket Beach Authority.

Decisions covering a wide range of topics also need consistency and cohesion to succeed. We wondered why some of Phuket's former coaches hadn't thought of the idea.

Judging from the reactions of several mayors that Phuketwan asked about the teamwork, there will be no problems finding strong players in attack and defence for Phuket United in future.

Probably gifted, another steve. Casual, different approach . . . all good signs of getting people to respond without formality and pretence.

Is it Vijjitt in Rawai? It is Thai owned and managed, so it can explain why it attracted such constellation.

It was certainly a Thai-owned resort.
