Phuket Marina Hub Concept Throws Down Welcome Mat for Superrich Yachties

Tuesday, May 12, 2015
PHUKET: Government support for Phuket as the ''Superyacht Hub of Asean'' came yesterday at a public meeting where local business generally welcomed the concept.

However, it was noted that there must actually be benefits for Thai people in attracting the wealthy up-market niche.

A special permit for superyachts and improved repair facilities at Phuket marinas form part of the plan.

Chula Sukmanop, Director General of the Thailand Marine Department, told the gathering at Phuket Provincial Hall's ''Convention Centre'' that the Government was determined to make Phuket the region's premium marina hub.

Efforts were now being made to overcome problems that made gaining formal permission to enter Thailand difficult.

There would be a ''Superyacht Show'' sometime between November and February 2016 but it was not clear what form the event would take or where.

In a media release that came straight after the public meeting, credit for the genesis of the ''Phuket marina hub'' idea was attributed to Gulu Lalvani, Chairman of Royal Phuket Marina, and Mrs Kobkarn Wattanavrangkul, Minister of Tourism and Sports, in January.

''I met with Khun Kobkarn in January after we had hosted the Phuket International Boat Show at Royal Phuket Marina and we discussed many ways in which to develop Thailand's marine industry.

''Among a series of ideas I proposed was to introduce a special charter licence for superyachts,'' Mr Lalvani is quoted as saying.

''There are many superyacht owners who would bring their superyachts to Phuket if they could charter them while here, and I know many people who charter superyachts around the world for in excess of USD100,000 per week.

''Introducing a charter license for superyachts who wish to charter in Thailand will significantly increase charter revenue for the country.''

The groudwork should be complete within two months, Khun Chula said.

Ahhhh another "hub" - excellent

It will be great until the taxi mob blockade the yachts until they get a piece of the action like they do to the U.S. Navy. Happy days !

Thai talks about "must be benefits for thai people" are premature!
Thai people have to invest first money and skills in Phuket marina. For success it must have the facilities, service and marina lay out as Singapore Marina's offer. In other words: a future Phuket Marina has to be competitive in every way with a Singapore marina level. Superyacht owners do not look for cheap, they want high level services as they get in other Asian Marinas. And they certainly not fancy 'thai paperwork'. A lot of homework to do first for Phuket business officials.

As the article states, how would Thailand benefit?
It really wouldn't.
The $100k would go straight into an a bank account not in Thailand. It's just a way of getting money from the government. The super rich always want a free ride.

Er, it does not take too much intelligence to work out that people with $100,000 to spend in a week will benefit Thais! The longer I stay in Thailand the more I want to leave, thankfully this should be within three months. This is a country where only Thais are allowed to do most of the jobs!

@TBS please also consider out of the $100,000 per week this includes gasoline which includes tax, maybe hiring a Phuket boat captain, dive instructor, cleaner, food and drinks purchased here, maid(s)onshore visits and these people probably do spend more than 60Baht on fried rice chicken....think about it. Every country wants this category of people to spend. Thailand has to compete!

It's a concept, in general a good idea, and there appears to be some serious interest from the government. All positives. The details - indeed the most important part to effectively implementing any or all parts of the plan - are the next step. These are essential to success for the industry, Phuket and Thailand.

100,000USD a week and some have to question if there is a benefit for Thai people. How about if Mr, Mrs or Miss has the choice of many tropical places to spend their large money freely all over the world so many countries would welcome them and court them or their money or both, developed countries like the US Florida, California etc and Australia to name a few I am sure would welcome them, but Thailand has to question will Thais benefit. Then you wonder why the US and Australia are developed countries in only a few hundred years, the US the biggest economy in the world and Thailand is.......well not like the US or Australia as they have to consider how Thais can benefit. Wow! Maybe look at immigrant countries like US/Aus and see how they do it as clearly they are economically much more successful than Thailand which has been around before both the US and Australia were even discovered by modern Europeans. Go figure! So funny or so sad in 2015!

Look at Chalong bay, Rawai Beach and Rassada Port at Phuket town, all speedboats & tour boats do not have decent marinas to cater customers for sea tours. We are waiting the Marine Department to plan public marinas for local sailors and professional tour operators at reasonable prices.

The idea that instead came out at the meeting was that the superyacht would bring very few benefits.. Not superyacht, but better increase the number of boats between 40 and 90 feet (12-30 mt) also called cruising boat. What, however, it's hard because of lackness of infrastructures: see the entrance channel to Phuket Marine or the current shamful state of Chalong port. port of Chaling.
