Part of a landslip that damaged cars in Patong during floods today

Phuket Landslip Wrecks Cars as Patong Disappears Beneath Floodwater

Friday, August 15, 2014
PHUKET: A dramatic downpour in the Phuket holiday hub of Patong flooded roads and triggered a landslip onto a main road today.

Intense rain began falling about 9am, flooding familiar parts of Patong - especially the Patong Hospital area, Kathu Police Station and the neighboring road. Some motorcycles were almost completely covered.

Elsewhere, gushing water triggered a landslip on Nanai Road that damaged five cars and a motorcycle. Nobody was injured.

By late morning, the floods had receded and Patong Council officials were mopping up.

Years of poor city planning have led to canals and natural water escape routes being built over, leaving Patong residents to face flooding several times each monsoon season.

Every year we get heavy rains.

Every year we get flooding.

Every year we get promises things will be fixed.

I guess no money to be made out of flood prevention so nobody cares.

@ThaiMike
More money bandaging the problem like Big Pharma - No money in making things work!

Its a bit hard to prevent floods when all the natural water courses have been filled in, the only mistake in the article is where it states "years of poor planing", it should say years of NO planing, Patong will always flood now as a result.

I see 'Broken Down Middle Road' flooded again this morning. This project is an absolute disgrace. 7 years now and still not finished. A nice little earner for somebody though.

@ Coxo there was a plan- it just involved making money, not introducing infrastructure.

When will the patong officials past and present who have signed off on these works that cause these many landslides and floods be brought to book to account for this destruction before the death tole starts to mount . The flooding and landslides are a fairly recent occurrence and the records showing who gave approval must still be intact and not let's hope been subject to any little accidents .

I recall a few years ago that some records at the town hall were said to have been lost in a flood.

There was a plan coxo it just didn't entail the good of the honest people of patong and it's tourist guests. As Mr Ree states 7 years for the Middle road and they still can't get it right ,if it took this long to complete a small stretch of road like this anywhere else around the world or around Thailand those responsible would be sacked after a year say and brought to book ,how much has this road really cost it must have overrun by millions after 7 years surely the contract negotiations must have given start finish date and a final costing . I wonder who signed off on this project maybe he could come back and explain to the people of patong why it's taken so long and is still not fit for purpose it doesn't bode well for any other major road transport projects into patong that were being pushed so hard previously as essential let's hope common sense prevails and ugly flyovers aren't allowed to spoil the view of the nice newly hard won beautiful sea view

Exactly coxo and who signed off on the bulk of projects that have blocked the run off . Let's hope our new lady Mayor can fix these problems dumped in her lap from her previous incumbents time

The area where happened the landslice is just 100 distance from my house. I was awakened yesterday early morning by a great bang.
When they startet building construction we've all predicted, this landslide will happen, but the answer was: " We are Thai, we know what we have to do"
