Phuket Killing: Swedish Man Who Pleaded Guilty Expects to Hear Sentence Soon

Monday, September 9, 2013
PHUKET: A Swedish man who appeared in Phuket Provincial Court today is likely to be sentenced on September 26 for his part in killing another Swede.

Johan Sebastian Ljung, 27, listened to police provide details about what happened in the aftermath of the killing in 2011, then was asked by the judge if he accepted the evidence.

''I did it but it was an accident,'' Mr Ljung said. ''I did not intend to kill him.''

Mr Ljung has pleaded guilty. In prison garb and wearing leg shackles, he told the judge today that he was anxious to hear his sentence as soon as possible.

Another Swedish man who faces the same charges has chosen to plead not guilty and is being tried separately.

On August 1, 2011, the pair planned to confront a former business partner from Pattaya, Maxim Schantz, at a five-star apartment block in Phuket City.

They intended to bind his wrists, then extract information from him. When Schantz struggled, Ljung said at the reenactment, he tried to grab Schantz by the shirt collar.

The knife in his hand pierced Schantz's carotid artery. As Schantz bled to death, the two men commandeered a motorcycle at gunpoint to flee.

The pair were arrested the next day in Cherng Talay and have been held in Phuket Prison since.

Mr Ljung previously told Phuketwan that he wanted his mother's foregiveness. Today he said he had had no further contact with his family.

His time in Phuket Prison is spent reading, exercising, studying the Thai language and writing letters, he told a reporter today.

''Please tell Maxim's mother that I am not going to make trouble for her,'' he added.

The two men face charges of conspiracy to kill; possession of a handgun with no permit; possession of a handgun in a public area; threatening use of as knife in a public area; theft of a motorcycle.
