Journalists being rescued after running out of fuel and life jackets

Phuket Journos Discover Secrets of Marine Safety on Speedboat Trip

Monday, February 2, 2015
PHUKET: A group of Phuket journalists on as junket to the emerging tourism province of Ranong experienced first-hand the need for safety on the water yesterday.

Travelling from the tourist island of Koh Prayam to another tourist island, Koh Chang, on Sunday afternoon, the speedboat carrying the 19 visitors ran out of fuel and began to drift.

It was then that people began to raise another issue: hey, none of us have life jackets. What if something went seriously wrong?

Tourism Authority of Thailand officials from Phuket were also on board as the group sought to explore the appeal of the budding province of Ranong, on the Thai-Burma border north of Phuket.

One of the journalists asked: ''Can we complain to the Marine Office?''

Back came the reply: ''Probably not. This is a Marine Office vessel.''

Channel 7 journalist Watcharaporn Yangkomut recorded the incident and posted a video on YouTube.

Before long, the journalists were on their way - wearing life jackets.

No wonder the normal speed boat crews not care about anything. They have nothing to look up too.

Ooh, I forgot, yesterday was a Sunday, than the marine 5 office is closed, responsible persons are not working. It's like TOT, Water Board, and .. etc. So, it is no one's fault. it was a Sunday!

It is time a higher Thai authority steps in and Make Marine 5 Office functional. This moment it is not serving/acting to take care safety of boating tourists around Phuket. YouTube of thai journalists are confirming that.

It would be funny if it was not a serious issue! Somebody should be sacked ... or as is normal in Thailand, reassigned.

Wow...only 19 people? I recently took my son on a 4 island day trip to Krabi, and about 10 minutes after leaving the harbor, the boat stopped, and we ended up having to transfer all passengers and their luggage onto a similar craft...hundreds of people. There was standing room only in some parts, and we were crammed on any available space on the boat. Instead of turning back, they pressed on for a 1-1/2 hour ride over windy and choppy seas. This boat was dangerously overloaded, and I doubt if there were enough life jackets to go around. These people didn't care one little bit about anything other than maxing out the boat and the associated revenue. The Marine Office is a complete farce, and this place is just cruising (literally) for an international catastrophe with hundreds of deaths. These large vessels were being operated and staffed by young people that spoke no English or other language, and seemed completely unconcerned for anything other than their Iphones. Insanity...never again!

Thai boat crews are famous for stealing fuel and journeys stop mid water seems they cant check a fuel tank either or life jacket numbers maybe they steal and sell them or simply the vessel is overloaded for the maximum baht possible, you wont see this episode in a TAT glossy brochure just on Phuket wan
nothing seems to embarrass Marine 5 who certainly aren't checking vessels for seaworthy and appropriate equipment though fuel theft is out of there control.

It's not a Marine 5 zone.

Don't worry...
Some people in authority will pretend to do something for a week without actually doing anything ... and soon another problem will appear taking away the focus on this annoying marine safety issues....

Only the chef of marine Office was absent to make The Show really brilliant also in absolute terms :D All the people in the boat - TAT, journolists, Marine Office associated staff - all are the people who are expected not be in such ridiculous situation, check for life-vest on boarding etc.

The System is rotten, both design, i.e. Rules are wrong (corruption , lack of rules of law, absence of demand for meritocracy) , and Bricks of the Systems are all wrong at the same time too - current people with their mindsets.
It's not enough just to change only Rules as Bricks are unable/unwilling to keep better rules and function under them.

For The System itself to change itself entirely is a very challenging task - all people at any level of authority in Thailand today are more or less part of The System, with legacy of doing wrong things along and within The System, but there are simply no other people who can bring the change, so it should be understood and tolerated. That's why a state governance reform within a country can't be quick, it probably will take roughly generation to get people who can earn living not only within corrupt system but by applying skills and knowledge.
