The building in southern Phuket expected to house a marine show

Phuket Import Application Includes Seals as Well as Dolphins, Says Official

Monday, July 21, 2014
PHUKET: An application has been made for seals to be imported to Phuket along with dolphins for an aquarium/dolphinarium, the Director of Phuket Fisheries said today.

Concern is growing among environmentalists and divers over a plan to open a show involving marine creatures at a water park near Phuket Zoo in southern Phuket.

Director of Fisheries Kiertikhun Jalernsawan said the applications for importing dolphins and seals had been passed to the head office of the Fisheries Department in Bangkok for a decision.

No decision had been made yet, he said.

The Director of Phuket Marine and Coastal Resources, Thanet Mannoi, said today that it would be the department's job to check on the welfare of the creatures once they arrived on Phuket.

''If you have animals like that, you have to treat them properly,'' he said. ''Treat them poorly and they will die.''

He said he did not know whether it was the intention of the people who have sought to import the dolphins and seals to breed them.

Approval from CITES (the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora) would be needed for importation, he said.

The Mayor of Chalong, Samran Sindapon, confirmed that approval had been given for construction of a round building of 32 metres near Phuket Zoo and it was expected to be completed later this year.

He said the local council ensured that building regulations were met but had no control over usage. It was the sole building permit granted for that site, he said.

Absolutely horrible, throwback a century or more
Also a new "Crocodile. World" show being built on Jao Fah + "Tiger Kingdom" on Kathu Patong Rd.
All cruelty to animals, offensive freak shows.
Should all be banned.
Please call in the army to stop them.
Profiteering at its worst.
Absolutely nothing in it for the island, will only tarnish its image.

The council ensures building regs are met but has no control over usage. Maybe we can have it turned into a drug den, a disco or a casino then as the activities within won't be controlled. It's about time 'not my problem mate' was addressed. Unfortunately the tourists from the nations this facility will be catering to have little interest in the welfare of animals.

Mr Ree, Many comments and signatures on the online petition against this are in Russian. Russians I have met in my horse business are very compassionate toward the animals. In fact I would say Germans seem to be the ones always recommending I put down one horse who has a chronic injury and cannot work safely. Please stop generalizing what are actually a very diverse group of people.

Dolphins are very intelligent creatures which form strong family bonds and live much shorter lives in captivity. They can often swim 100 or more km's a day and need open water to communicate. Experts believe tanks make their communications sound like a garbled mess. It's a miserable existence. And the fact that Sea Shepherd has the origin of 3 of these dophins to the Taiji dolphin cull is enough to stop it. The US has banned sourcing dolphins from there. So should Thailand.

If they aren't breaking any laws then why should the army be "called in to stop them". If the thai citizenry where all against it I guess there would be popular support for a ban.
As for there being "nothing in it for the island", well maybe you should ask the staff working at the various places you mentioned what they think? Not to mention the large number of tourists that go to those same places?
Or is it only you that decides what is acceptable and what is not? If you don't like it, then don't go there. All this talk of "ruining the island" is ridiculous, it's just one of many buildings in Phuket.

Phuket is famous for its nature environment with previous so nice beaches. I hope the Army can make it so all the nature can come back again.
Get rid of all of those unnecessary torture animal shows.

Keeping dolphins and seals in captivity is unconscionably cruel and is no different from putting an innocent person in prison and depriving them of their family. No one can provide the animals with conditions and choices that even come close to what they need to live a life that is natural and fulfilling for them. The harm to which they will be subjected is logically far greater than the harm to which the patrons would be subjected if these animals were never captured from their homes. I certainly will not consider Thailand as a vacation option (we were considering Phuket for our next vacation) and will let my colleagues and others know of this atrocity in the making.

"Dr" Nedim hypocritius

I wonder how you can live in cruel inhumane California where we have Waterworld, but "will not consider Thailand as a vacation option" because of a planned delphinarium? Not to mention your (probably) native Turkey where we have doplhin shows ad well?
Australia, Europe, Japan are other places that are out of the question for you and your eco-concious colleagues. Tough situation.

I beg Thailand to NOT import dolphins and seals for entertainment. This would be cruel and inhumane, and tantamount to imprisoning innocent animals in an environment where they would not be able to thrive and, basically, turning them into slaves. And for what? To entertain unenlightened humans, who do not understand that animals have feelings and lives of their own and deserve the same freedom that all of us crave and deserve. Thailand would look like a backward country which enlightened people would not want to visit. I know I would never visit a country backward and ignorant enough to treat sentient animals like slaves for the "entertainment" of ignorant, insensitive, uninformed, and callous humans. Thailand should set a higher example for other countries to follow.

So you would not visit the US, Canada, most of the EU, Australia, Japan etc?
It's also preposterous for you or anybody to demand that Thailand should be a "leading example" against the wishes of the general thai public, especially considering your own probably more developed country has dolphin shows. Don't you see the hypocrisy shining strong like a thousand suns?

MC, sounds like you will have limited destinations for your next holiday. You could go to......umm...which country.....maybe just stay at home.

If this goes ahead - which it probably will, having followed the correct protocol. I hope leaflets can be handed to tourists in the arrivals hall at PIA, asking them NOT to visit, or support it in any way.
