Phuket Highway patrol officers wait to catch speedsters, illegal taxis

Phuket Highway Police 'Nab 20 Speedsters Per Hour, Catch Black Taxis'

Thursday, May 16, 2013
PHUKET: Highway Police have been cracking down on speedsters, buses with poor maintenance and ''black'' illegal taxis at checkpoints on Phuket this week.

Phuketwan encountered the Highway Police pulling over vehicles on Phuket's Thepkasattri Road, the main north-south artery.

The checkpoint shifts each day but the open road is just about the only stretch on Phuket that qualifies as ''highway.''

Highway Police Superintendent Major Monporn Likitmanon said that officers under his command also had to cover neighboring Krabi and Phang Nga so they switch from one province to another.

''We have been booking 20 black taxis and 20 speeding motorists each hour on Phuket this week,'' he said today.

''We use a speed camera to detect the people who are exceeding the 90 kph limit. Buses get pulled over to be checked, too.

''Mechanical problems are our business. The Tourist Police are the ones on the lookout for illegal guides.''

He said his officers were not checking whether or not the meters of metered taxis were being used. Only a small proportion of taxis based at Phuket International Airport are fitted with meters.

Can someone ask Police Superintendent Major Monporn Likitmanon, where the 90kph speed limit sign is, I have only seem 60 kph signs. Unless they have recently installed them. Beside, anyone with any brains knows that even 90 is too fast in built up areas. Also... 20 and 20 every hour, nice round figures, I believe I could book a lot more, given the chance.

Editor Comment:

On the open highway the speed limit is 90. The 60 signs are in built-up areas or advice on the speed for corners.

Move the cameras to the other smaller arteries and get some of the transport trucks and vans that daily endanger everyone but themselves, these might not qualify as highways but these guys pretend they are.

Phuket -IOC- if you approach Heroines monument from the west (Cherng Talay) there is a large sign about 100m short of the jcn with the speeds published- there are others around the island.

For Tim the highway police (who are part of the Transport Department not the Royal Thai Police) do set up on other routes - I've seen them behind BIS and the marked rat run roads that lead to the Old Airport Road. As with a lot of things its resources and with 3 provinces to patrol they can't always be wear you want. At least for a change a Gov't department IS being proactive albeit in small steps.

Do they show you a picture of proof how fast you have been going, if you were speeding ? How much is the official and legal fine for speeding ?

Ed, I am not saying you are wrong, BUT, Thepkrasattri RD, is a road NOT a highway. Just south of the Police check point, near the "Gateway" the sign clear states 60kph, there are NO signs indicating a high speed, ANYWHERE. Mr Rees, if you can mention only one sign, clearly we would ALL like to see a photo of it, ed, maybe you and your brownie could do us all a favour.

Editor Comment:

Sorry, Phuket_IOC, we have scores of higher priorities. If Thepkasattri Road is not a highway in places, then the Highway Police have no rationale for being on Phuket.

Positive steps forward, keep up the good work. Why not set up some officers for those red light offenders as well, you could easily stop them at the next light with a coordinated radio effort. Just think of the revenue that could be created.

@Jon, I think revenue might be the wrong word Jon. Pay rise would probably replace it.

Does anyone have a link for the Thai Highway Code converted to English?

@Sudo, here is an English translation, but it isn't complete. http://www.bkkriders.com/law/motorvehicle.html
