PHUKET: Gerard Phillip Caleo, the general manager of the Hard Rock Cafe on Phuket, has appeared in a Sydney court charged with the stabbing murder of a woman in 1990.
Rita Caleo, 39, was stabbed to death while her two young children slept in an adjoining bedroom, Sydney media outlets reported.
A live-in nanny heard muffled sounds coming from the main bedroom of the unit in Bay Street, Double By, before finding Mrs Caleo's body at 1.30am.
Ten months earlier her millionaire brother, Dr Michael Chye, had been shot dead while sitting inside his Mercedes-Benz as it was parked in the garage of his Woollahra home.
In today's coverage, the Sydney Morning Herald did not name Mr Caleo for legal reasons. But the Daily Mail, which now has an Australian outlet, did name Mr Caleo.
He is Rita Caleo's brother-in-law. Her husband Mark ran a Sydney restaurant at the time of her murder.

Caleo has since been charged with solicit to murder and being an accessory before and after the fact to murder.
An inquest into Mrs Caleo's death held in 1991 heard she handed her solicitor a sealed envelope just three months before she was murdered, the Sydney Morning Herald reported.
The envelope read: ''To be opened only if my death is unnatural.''
Inside the envelope, which Mrs Caleos solicitor opened in the presence of detectives following her murder, were the names of two people she accused of organising the gangland-style execution of her brother.
Despite extensive investigations into both murders, no one was charged until Gerard Caleo, 42, was arrested at Sydney International Airport on August 15.
The Hard Rock Cafe outlet in Phuket is based in Patong. There is no suggestion that anyone involved with the brand has any connection to the death of Rita Caleo.
