Passenger numbers through Phuket International Airport point skywards

Phuket Grows More International and Averages One Million Passengers a Month

Friday, May 17, 2013
PHUKET: Proof that Phuket is becoming more and more a genuine international island comes with the latest statistics for April from Phuket International Airport.

International passengers rose by 31 percent year-on-year to 507,235 while domestic passengers increased by just 8.09 percent to 414,936.

In April 2012, the numbers were within a couple of thousand of each other - 387,000 international passengers to almost 384,000 domestic passengers.

The tally of arrivals and departures for April fell just shy of one million at 922,171.

But add on the one-million-plus results for January, February and March, and the total for the first four months is 4,066,471.

While May usually marks a dip from high season to low season, the downward curve is likely to be shallow this year compared to past years.

The million-plus average for 2013's first four months indicates the tally for the whole year is likely to be around 10.5 million.

Rival holiday island Bali is expecting three million international visitors this year and Phuket is on course to entertain about 2.5 million.

That number stacks up against 320,000 registered Phuket citizens and perhaps 400,000 from other provinces.

The 100,000 to 200,000 legal and illegal Burmese tip the numbers balance even further towards ''international.''

The acceleration in the internationalisation of Phuket should mean that the local Phuket authorities pay greater attention to issues related to tourism.

There is no lack of concern about safety and security. Yet if tourists had more say, the environment would be better protected and taxi and tuk-tuk fares would be a lot lower.

Not really understand why it is written that Phuket is on course to entertain 3,5 million international visitors if there are expected to come 10,5 million visitors, and the monthly no of international arrivals is 507,235 passengers ? And the total of 10,5 million is also a bit dodgy if the total no of arrivals and departures is below 1 million, that would indicate more in the range of maybe say 5-6 million tourists or people visiting Phuket for one reason or another .

You are misreading the figures. The totals are for arrivals AND departures, domestic AND international. So a quick method is to divide by two for arrivals, then divide by two again for international arrivals. International arrivals are up but the end result is about 2.5 million overseas visitors expected in 2013. Some inventive high figures are offered. They're not correct.

Yes, I can see that, and that makes sense too. Probably hard to get the total picture as immigration would not even be able to provide a correct figure since some do the passport formalities in Bangkok and flies domestic to Phuket, but no matter which number it is , then it is a lot of people..;-)

We may say "More pennyless low budget travelers coming to Phuket".
Most travelers arriving at Phuket Airport and are moving as soon as possible to nearby provinces excepted those coming on package tours.

I don't think that's entirely true. Otherwise, Phuket's five-star resorts would be feeling the pinch. They don't seem to be.

I am in Bangkok at Queen Sirikit National Convention Centre for TDEX dive Show and in another part you have a Domestic Travel Show offering cheap packages to the largest resorts in Thailand.

Large hotels fill up their rooms with up to 60% discounted prices.

I was visiting the Thailand Travel & Dive Expo 2013 on Friday but I was more than disappointed by the lack of major dive operators and dive centers, especially from the Andaman Sea as none of the largest dive boat operators and dive shops from Phuket, PhangNga and Krabi were present and most of dive instructors, Thai and foreigners alike, did not come to visit the dive show.

Also, all distributors of worldwide known dive brand equipments were offering up to 80% discount which were showing a decline in the dive industry in Thailand.

We may understand that lack of unwillingess to rent a booth or to come to visit Thailand Travel & Dive Expo 2013 as:

1/- TCEB Exhibition did not invite foreign dive tour-operators as it should be done to promote Thailand as a worlwide known dive destination.

2/- TAT was not involved to promote each dive destinations in Thailand with local dive operators such as Phuket-PhangNga-Krabi, Koh Samui-Koh Tao, Pattaya and Koh Chang.

3/- Dive liveaboard operators and day dive boat operators had a drop up to 40% in booking for the winter 2012-2013 and were able to fill up vacant places by offering large discounts.

4/- Recession in European countries bring European divers to choice cheaper alternative dive destinations or to scrap oversea dive trips.

5/- High spending European divers do not want to come to Thailand anymore as too many overcrownded cattle-dive-boats on popular dive sites such as Similan, Koh Bon, Koh Tachai, Richelieu Rock, P.hi-Phi, Koh Ha Yai, Hin Daeng and Hin Muang to name some.

6/- Mismanagement by the Thai Authorities (Department of National Parks, Fishery Department, Marine Police, Thai Navy, etc) to reinforce the law against illegal fishing by poachers is evident on daily basis and is spreading very fast through international dive forums.
