Phuket Governor Calls for International Standards on Holiday Island

Wednesday, October 21, 2015
PHUKET: International standards needed enforcing on Phuket and roadside billboards were as good a place as any to start, a large meeting on tourism heard today.

''Anybody here not been overseas,'' Goverrnor Jamleran Tipayapongtada asked about 60 people from a range of tourism-related businesses at Phuket Provincial Hall. No hands went up.

''So everybody has been overseas, and they come back with fresh ideas. Please tell me, why is Phuket the way it is?''

There was no immediate answer. The governor said that it was time to make Phuket a truly ''international standard'' destination.

One of many issues has been the ugliness of roadside billboards. The governor said that from now on, people will have to make sure their billboards are legal or they will be torn down.

''People say 'We can't do it. We can't do it.' Of course we can.''

The governor signalled a need for change in attitudes. Today's meeting appeared to be the start of imposing his views.

Best start with billboards - then jetskis and parasails then.

How about the police setting example and obeying laws as well? That might be nice! No more riding the wrong way down Bangla road for example !

The answer to his question about why Phuket is the way it is can be answered in one word - corruption.

If he can turn Phuket around, that would qualify him for becoming PM. And it would qualify Phuket for a better future.

The new Governor needs to strop talking and making vague statements and just do. This has been always the problem here. Pick the top 5 issues on Phuket and tackle them formulate a plan, put it into action and then do all your talking.

"...ugliness of roadside billboards?" Why don't you start with the ugliness of the litter and garbage that locals thoughtlessly throw everywhere and anywhere. It's a daily occurrence that I see Phuketians chucking empty plastic bottles, plastic bags, just about anything from their motorbikes as they drive along. They don't even give it a second thought as they throw it into the beautiful, green landscape that is Phuket, but that is sadly slowly disappearing. It's hard to understand how people couldn't give a care about their own home.

Why is it that only illegal billboards are considered ugly?
It might be fairer if the authorities were to instigate a deadline for when these billboards should be removed so those who have recently put up their illegal billboards could at least get some return from their outlay.
