UPDATE Young Phuket Girl in Chasm Crash Dies in Hospital
Saturday, December 13, 2014
THE PARENTS of Molly Bailey opted to turn off her life support system at 9.15pm on Saturday after doctors said there was no chance she could recover. Molly was a student at Kajonkiet International School. A cremation ceremony will be held at Maknik Temple on Wednesday.
PHUKET: Molly Bailey, the eight-year-old seriously injured when a vehicle landed in a washed-out section of road in central Phuket, remains on life support in hospital.
Police have yet to interview her mother Pakkamon Doungchayatemjarat, 38, about the crash.
Police have deferred speaking with Khun Pakkamon while Molly remains in intensive care at Vachira Phuket Hospital in Phuket City.
The pair plunged off a road in central Phuket late on Thursday night into a washed-away chasm. Khun Pakkamon remained conscious and was able to call in help.
Large signs have now been placed along the road warning motorists that the road ends abruptly, the mayor of Srisoonthorn Council, Worayut Songyot, said today.
He said he believed there were smaller warning signs on the road but that they could have been stolen.
The damage to the road first appeared about a month ago but no effort has been made to fill the chasm.
Gordon and O have asked me to pass on their sincere thanks and appreciation to everybody that has sent message and their condolences. They are struggling to answer everyone of the messages at this very difficult time but hope to do so over the coming weeks.
Your respects can be made to Molly who is now laid at the temple at Baan Maniq between Cherngtalay and the Heroines Monument. It is behind the Market and next to Permsap Villas in Maniq. The temple is open daily between 9am and 8pm with a small ceremony each day between 7pm and 8pm.
The service itself will be at 12 noon on Wednesday 17th December at the same location.
Everybody is welcome.

So sad. A young innocent girl on life support from an accident that should have never happend. All she was thinking about was the fun she had with friends she had just left. And what Santa was bringing her for Xmas. But now she is on life support. My thoughts and prayers are for you and your family Molly.

This poor little girl lost her fight for life lastnight. Prayers and condolences to her family. Such a tragedy, one that should never have happened. When will councils take responsibility for their inaction?

I don't know this family, but this brings tears to my eyes. I look at my youngest daughter who is 12 now, realizing, this sort of accidents can happen to all of us.But i also believe that there is somebody out there that might have been able to prevent this from happening, by doing what he or they were supposed to do. Too late now for this girl, and so, the only thing we can do now is send the family our condolences, and respect.@Editor: In the update, do you mean Manik Temple, instead of Maknik? Please kindly follow up. Thanks.

The reporter filed it as Maknik but it should be Manik.
RIP Molly. My condolences to her family. What a sad turn.
A tough reminder also for me, to keep my kids wearing the safety belts. Just more lucky, I guess.

What a tragic waste of life because some idiot chose to leave a dangerous road unrepaired for over a month.

One month road washed out no BIG signs or barriers to stop an event like this....The lack of public safety on this island is Awful and the heads of the town and city officials should be held responsible for this.....

Are we going to hear what the council, road authority, Police, even the Governor of Phuket is going to say? Why did this happen and what processes are or should be in place to stop it happening again.

A young life lost, absolutely without anything to justify that. Very, very sad.

Well, if the smaller road signs were "stolen", why wasn't something more permanent erected when the "theft" was discovered? Surely, the mayor of Srisoonthorn Council, Worayut Songyot would have had his workers checking on this washed out road on a regular basis. If the municipality had behaved in a responsible manner and properly blocked the road once the washout was discovered, this crash could have been prevented.

Editor Comment:
A major drums barrier has now been installed.
In most countries this would lead to criminally negligent homicide chargers to be laid against the authority responsible for road maintenance and safety.
Over here it barely extracts a public statement from the said authorities.
A completely unnecessary loss of life and as usual, nobody assumes any responsibility whatsoever.

"A major drums barrier has now been installed."
I hope the drums are not valuable as scrap, or handy for some locals' landscaping, because clearly folks do not give a rats ares around there for the greater good (to put it mildly)

"A major drums barrier has now been installed."
Last year there were large blue containers for garbage put along the Klong in Cape Panwa..the next day all but 2 were stolen..hopefully the barrier will remain in place..unless someone steals it..

The professional approach by police would be immediately after this crash to take all possible municipal or other officers who could be kept responsible for such safety measures into preliminary custody and search in the court warrant for their further arrests and searches of premises .
Normally they should be kept in police custody until investigators collected all necessary pieces of evidence , to avoid that faking of evidence us taking a place - either by creating new one or dismantling existing one, that's a main purpose of preliminary custody.
But with a current course of event we will hardly ever knew the real state of things, whether there were installed small signs, or not etc.
And without it is impossible to make further analysis whether even if found installed , these small signs were enough (prior alleged stealing), to punish responsible persons and accordingly to prevent further similar situations .
Circumstances of this crash actually looks worse and crazier than you can find in any movie.
