Smoke pours from garbage in Phuket City but officials believe it's non-toxic

UPDATE Phuket Garbage Dump Set Alight, Toxic Smoke Concerns Downplayed

AUTHORITIES will cover the smouldering area of Phuket's tip and compact a large section to prevent oxygen feeding more fires, Governor Nisit said after visiting the blaze site in Phuket City. The project will cost 89 million baht, he said.

Original Report

PHUKET: Public Health officials on Phuket will be checking today to ensure that a garbage fire carrying potentially toxic fumes is fully under control.

The blaze in Phuket's large ''rubbish mountain'' at Saphan Hin in Phuket City was first noticed about 6.30pm last night. Garbage Pond No. 5 burned for about three hours until firemen brought it under control.

The pall of smoke did not appear to be any danger but authorities are concerned to make sure today that the fire is fully extinguished.

It's feared workers on a garbage truck or at the Saphan Hin disposals site may have discarded a cigarette, starting the blaze.

Phuket produces more waste than it can dispose of properly and the excess waste is stored at Saphan Hin.

Of course it's not toxic. The plastic is recycled and electronics, batteries and drugs are returned to the shops - riiiight?

Public Health officials on Phuket evidently have no idea about the hazardous affects of burning plastic and styrene (styrofoam) and shouldn't just blow it off. In fact, Public Health officials in Thailand ought to study the issue so they can realize that the burning of plastic domestic waste is very harmful to human health and to the environment. It is a HUGE public health problem that does not even get addressed here. A short and simple article can be found here - http://www.wecf.eu/cms/download/2004-2005/homeburning_plastics.pdf.

Saphan Hin is a disgrace and a environmental time bomb for Phuket town area.. It's ground water is polluted ( nice for thai people who have a water well), and there is a lot of toxic rubbish.
Photos show fire fighters without breathing equipment? Are they not concerned about their health?

Obviously they have never heard of spontaneous combustion! They dump everything in there without any attempt at segregation. Heaven knows what a toxic mix & what damage to the environment.
