AUTHORITIES will cover the smouldering area of Phuket's tip and compact a large section to prevent oxygen feeding more fires, Governor Nisit said after visiting the blaze site in Phuket City. The project will cost 89 million baht, he said.
PHUKET: Public Health officials on Phuket will be checking today to ensure that a garbage fire carrying potentially toxic fumes is fully under control.
The blaze in Phuket's large ''rubbish mountain'' at Saphan Hin in Phuket City was first noticed about 6.30pm last night. Garbage Pond No. 5 burned for about three hours until firemen brought it under control.
The pall of smoke did not appear to be any danger but authorities are concerned to make sure today that the fire is fully extinguished.
It's feared workers on a garbage truck or at the Saphan Hin disposals site may have discarded a cigarette, starting the blaze.
Phuket produces more waste than it can dispose of properly and the excess waste is stored at Saphan Hin.
Of course it's not toxic. The plastic is recycled and electronics, batteries and drugs are returned to the shops - riiiight?
