THE Asean Plus Six summit will be coming to Phuket on the weekend of June 13-14, the Deputy PM announced this afternoon after a helicopter flight over the island. The announcement came at the Hilton Phuket Arcadia Resort and Spa, which will be the conference centre. Several of the 16 national groupings are expected to stay at other resorts in southern Phuket, including Patong. At least two major conferences will also be held at the Hilton Arcadia in the leadup to the Asean Summit. Industry leaders class it as a huge boost for Phuket's economy.

PHUKET will be getting a security check today to make sure it can meet requirements for the Asean Plus Six summit next month, the Deputy Prime Minister, Suthep Tueksuban said today.
He was speaking at a meeting involving top officials from Bangkok, senior military officers and local authorities at Phuket airport.
Discussions will be held on security and around 11am the deputy PM will fly by helicopter with military authorites to get an overview of the island and its potential.
The Defence Minister accompanied the Deputy PM to the island today and by 9.20am they were involved in a conference at the airport with local authorities.
With the Deputy PM came a team of 12 while the Defence Minister was accompanied by eight senior advisers.
The total from Bangkok in the official ''forward party'' was about 60 people.
Phuket Governor Wichai Praisa-Nob, three vice governors, the new police chief, the rear admiral in charge of the Third Navy and resort owners and hotel officials were all part of the welcoming delegation.
