Passenger Scare as Man Commits Suicide
Friday, August 8, 2014
PHUKET: An unusual emergency that took place on a flight from Phuket International Airport has been disclosed belatedly in a BBC radio report dealing with mid-air panics.
The radio account, in a text report by Tom de Castella, related several passengers' experiences in the aftermath of the interception and diversion of an aircraft to Manchester airport this week.
Among the flights that stuck in the minds of people was this one from Phuket:
Jane Barrie, Rye, East Sussex: ''We were coming back from Phuket when a gentleman killed himself on our flight. We didn't know at the time that it was suicide.
''The first thing we noticed was that the crew started running around a bit. We thought the gentleman had had a heart attack.
''They wrapped him in a blanket and moved everyone in the rows around him away. He was four rows up from us, we had to pass him to get to the toilet.
''When we arrived in Heathrow all those who attended the gentleman were taken away for questioning. It was then we were told that he'd taken his life. It was very traumatic.
''One of the air crew was crying. A little girl had been sat across the aisle from us and was asking: 'Why is that man not waking up?'
''I'm always a little bit wary now about flying. It's something I'm never ever going to forget.''
There was no indication as to when the suicide occurred or on which particular airline, or when. Natural deaths do also occur on flights from time to time.
Several other even more dramatic BBC accounts of incidents are in the report.

That wouldn't have been on a Phuket flight anyway as they don't fly to Heathrow direct. I would imagine he was on a flight from Bangkok and had come from Phuket. Sorry to kill your story, but it really is a non-runner!!! Keep on investigating though!

You are challenging a BBC account, phuket madness. I thought we'd made that clear.
But you've published it and sensationalised it Ed. It was no ton a Phuket flight, they do not fly from Phuket direct to Heathrow and i believe you know that.

We've published the item carried by the BBC with full attribution, pm, because of its relevance to our readers. I guess the photograph must have alarmed you.

Ho hum. Any ''sensationalism'' is all in your head.
Phuket Flight Triggers Passenger Scare as Man Commits Suicide
Who wrote this headline Ed??? Sensationalising the story as it was not a Phuket flight and you do know that. Why is everything always in everybody else's head and never yours?
And the actual photo is irrelevant to your story imo.

phuket madness, anyone with a moniker like yours has no possible grounds for accusing others of ''sensationalism.'' The headline is accurate and engaging. The story is correctly attributed to the BBC. Your insincere complaints are a waste of time. If you think there are factual errors, take it up with the BBC - or follow the Royal Thai Navy's example and sue us.
Here we go again...The editor sentialism in his head again. I have to say I love reading this rubbish on Phuketwan..it seems as though Mr Farang editor may have worked for childrens comic books before as most of the content has no factual meaning ...ho ho hum !

You say ''here we go again'' but it's your first comment, expat. Don't bother us with more mindless nonsense, please.
The only reference to Phuket in the BBC article is that the woman came from Phuket. Nowhere does it say 'Phuket flight' or something similar.
But the ed got his attention again :)

''We were coming back from Phuket when a gentleman killed himself on our flight.'' How many more reference to Phuket do you need for the article to become of interest?
All issues if life and death should be of interest to you, as they are to most readers, whether on Phuket or in the air above it.
The BBC article is a compelling read and we make no apologies for linking to it. Those who find fault with our judgement are . . . well, you know what you are.
"How many more reference to Phuket do you need"
In order for your header and intro to be correct, many more.

The problem is in your lack of judgement, not ours. If you find PW so disturbing, stevenl, I suggest you go read the alternative sources of information.
It is not accurate as it was not a Phuket flight, and as i questioned before, who wrote the headline Ed? The marbles are slowly dropping!!!

People only have to see your moniker to realise who has the problems with ''marbles dropping.'' I became an adult some time ago. Your marbles plainly need attention.
Waste the BBC's time, not mine, please.
Are "we were coming from Phuket" and "Phuket flight" the same?? You really are a stubborn old git aren't you!!

We try not to make mistakes, pm, and it would certainly be a mistake to help you in your efforts to make a fool of yourself.
.
Your attempts to catch us out are quite pathetic and a waste of our time. I will cease being polite: Go away.
The editor must have been spend to much time in Thailand.
I would understand for a thai, but It isn't such a big of deal for a foreigner to admit your mistake. Such an obvious one! But if face is so important to you, you should be aware that you are losing even more face points in the comments than with your mistaken and sensational headline.

When we make a mistake, we'll let you know, John. As you once responded to another commenter: ''Geez what a nitpick you are!'' (er)
Sorry Ed but the critics are spot on this time and are not "challenging the BBC account" but your sensationalizing of it. The only reference to Phuket in the BBC piece is that the writer was "coming back from" here. To turn this into "Phuket Flight" is sloppy to say the least and not worthy of you. How do you know they hadn't spent a couple of days in Bangkok? Or Dubai?

We haven't sensationalised anything, quite the opposite. We even add: ''There was no indication as to when the suicide occurred or on which particular airline.''
Perhaps you don't understand human nature but had the passenger spent non-transit time in Dubai or Bangkok, she would have mentioned them as the departure point.
Every flight has a destination and a point of origin and, even if passengers pass through short stopovers or transits\ briefly, such a trip remains a ''Phuket flight.''
And that's it on this issue. I don't have time for trifles and trivia. Go bother the BBC.
There are 'direct' flights from LHR to HKT. By definition, a direct flight does allow a transfer at a hub. Examples are via BKK on Thai or via TPE on EVA. These are categorized and sold as direct. There are charter non stops to London regional airports such as LGW on Thomson that have been diverted to LHR. The original report was correct. Don't blame the editor if you don't understand airline travel ticketing terms. If you have a complaint take it up with the international bodies ICAO and IATA who set the term to which all member countries have agreed.

It's interesting to note that when the Editor says on his last posting that, "And that's it on this issue." he then accepts a posting that is supportive of his position but does not post two of my submissions which challenge his position. Ah well, I guess that is the power of being a moderator (censor).

I made a mistake, Tom, in calling a halt without waiting for the eminently reasonable and perfectly logical responses posted in my defence. Like the smallest and slowest assailant among a gang of attackers in a dark alley, you now complain that you didn't have the chance to get in your kicks before the police arrived. Sorry about that. Try adding something constructive next time.
Ed: "Try adding something constructive next time."
