Paul Thurlow, latest of seven British deaths on Phuket in three months

Phuket Expat Deathlist Topped by Seven British Men

Saturday, May 21, 2011
UPDATE

THE official list also excludes the death of John Stephen Smout, 49, killed when his motorcycle smashed into a car in Rawai on April 23. His death takes the known tally of British expat deaths on Phuket in the past three months to seven.

Original Report

PHUKET police have recorded the deaths of 16 expats on the island in the past three months, with six of those fatalities being British men, latest statistics show.

Once again, deaths by drowning at Karon beach appear to be absent from the list that will be presented to Phuket's envoys when honorary consuls meet with Phuket Governor Tri Augkaradacha on Monday.

The list, put together by the office of Phuket Police Commander Major General Pekad Tantipong, serves the purpose of dispelling myths and rumors about the ''mysterious'' deaths of expats, beloved by the misinformed and ignorant.

One valid mystery is why expats who drown at Kata or Karon are seldom on the updating list, which has been compiled since last year.

A tourist whose death on Phuket is unrecorded, Chinese Wei Fuo Thang, 32, was pulled from the water by lifeguards at Karon on May 14 and died later in Patong Hospital.

Ms Hitomi Shibata Japan diveboat propeller in face Raya island May 4

The deaths to May 18 take the tally for the year so far to 23 - with Mr Wei omitted - compared with 73 official expat deaths recorded in 2010 on Phuket. Several Karon drownings of expats went unrecorded.

As usual, the vast majority of the deaths are male. The high number of British deaths in the past three months appears to be a statistical aberration.

A list which is constantly missing several deaths only confirms the Police is either incompetent, unwilling or outright covering up expat deaths on Phuket.

I guess just another dead foreigner isn't all that important but the bad press it would bring is.

Editor Comment:

Provision of a list is a sign that transparency is encouraged. Whether there's a cover-up, a falling-out or a simple bureaucratic bungle is less significant than the fact that readers can see the list for themselves and point out omissions. Shake off your paranoid expat conditioning. Best to recognise progress when it's under your nose.
