PHUKET: A man caught with a kilo of methamphetamine valued at 3.5 million baht worked as a speedboat captain on Phuket until last year but had no speedboat licence, he admitted today.
Somphak Suphak, 30, was arrested by police about 3pm yesterday after he made a drugs pickup from a bin in Viset Road, Chalong, southern Phuket.
In the bin was a one kilo pack of ya ice methamphetamine and 10,000 baht, he said. The money was in payment for his role as a go-between.
Khun Somphak went to the bin after receiving a telephone call. Police were watching and had an arrest warrant.
Officers followed him to his house in Rawai where they confiscated the drugs, the cash and six mobile telephones.
Khun Somphak told a media conference at Phuket Police Headquarters in Phuket City today that he had already been a drugs courier about 10 times, collecting a large block of drugs then breaking it down into smaller amounts for delivery to other points on Phuket, he said.
''The block has a value of about two million baht but is sold for about 3.5 million baht in small quantities,'' he said.
He said he had never sold drugs to tourists and he gave up driving a speedboat out of Chalong between Phuket and Phi Phi because of family concerns.
