UPDATE Chinese Tourist Pulled from Water in Krabi Dies on Phuket

Friday, January 9, 2015
Updating All Day, Every Day

A CHINESE tourist who was carried in a coma from the water on Friday and taken from Krabi to Phuket died in Phuket International Hospital at 10.10am on Saturday without regaining consciousness.

Original Report

PHUKET: Doctors on Phuket are fighting tonight to save the life of a Chinese woman pulled in a coma from the sea near Phi Phi today.

Wu-Dimin, 39, was carried to the shore at Mai Pai island near Phi Phi by a Western tourist after he noticed her not moving in the water.

A team of paramedics from Krabi Hospital took the woman to the mainland and she was later transferred to Phuket International Hospital where doctors were trying to save her life this evening.

Captain Seksan Boonlert of Phi Phi Police said that the tourist was on a day trip with Nonsathak Marine from Rawai in southern Phuket.

''An after-lunch swim at Mai Pai was the last activity before the tour boat was due to return to Phuket,'' the captain said. ''The woman may have had too much too eat and gone swimming with a full stomach.''

Captain Seksan said there were six or seven similar cases every year.

It's not known whether Ms Wu-Dimin was wearing a life jacket.

The Director of Krabi Marine, Boonchao Tangsiripaisarn, said a campaign was being conducted to ensure speedboat passengers wore life jackets.

''Once they're away from the piers, though, it is up to the individual guides to ensure their safety,'' he said.

Life jackets are for when you fall into water not for swimming in?

Editor Comment:

That depends on whether you can swim.

I can swim well before lunch, during the lunch & yes, also in-course-of-the-lunch too,and as well just after the lunch.

But people who are 1st or 3rd time on the beach or in tropical climate can react differently - as so many reported death of Chinese/Indian tourist , dying while just snorkeling , incl.wearing life jackets .

And this case - I understand they swam off Koh Mai Pai shore, there is nothing particularly hazardous for swimming , as far as I can remember.

Provably , they really should be kept off water after the lunch...

A real lifewest or lifejacket has all its buoyancy in the front, this helps turn the body around, so that the face is up...additionally they have a collar with buoyancy to keep your face free of the water. They are not really good to swim in ... sailors often use sailor wests , with less buoyancy and no collar in order to improve the mobility ... in these you can easier do a bit of swimming.

Despite the crassness of your comment Aydear the urban myth about not swimming straight after eating was de-bunked ages ago.

Please don't tell me know the presumption is that life jackets are for people that cannot swim. As a person that swam since I was 7 and now an Advanced Diver this would be very inadequate on so many levels. Swimming is partly about confidence, swimming in the sea is harder if a wave comes and the person swallows salt water this can induce panic and then another wave etc.....is this what the system really is non swimmers wear life jackets and go in the sea!

If you have never gone on a snorkelling day-trip with Koreans or Chinese who cannot swim, you haven't had a common Phuket experience, FF.

I'm wondering if this is not yet another case of 'box jellyfish' that nobody ever wants to talk about?

Editor Comment:

Not box jellyfish. We're happy to talk about box jellyfish.

As per my second comment if this is the case it is truly hard to believe on so many levels. Fortunately I do not have to worry as I grew up in a developed country. I am so grateful I was educated about this issue and many other issues. I just can't believe this is legally going on in 2015 in a major tourist place. People who can't swim willingly going into the sea! Well we have plenty of drivers with no license who cannot drive driving, so .....sad.
