PHUKET: Friday's first meeting between Phuket's 24 honorary consuls and the island's governor, Nisit Jansomwong, has been postponed until April 21.
The gathering - first for seven months - was expected to deal with beach clearances and the governor's ''10 percent zone'' solution, the ban on beach chairs, jet-ski scams, high tuk-tuk and taxi fares and other Phuket problems.
All 24 honorary consuls had initially been invited to talk with the governor on Friday afternoon. It would have been the first meeting held at a hotel rather than at Phuket Provincial Hall in Phuket City.
Governor Nisit took charge in October last year. The previous Phuket honorary consuls' meeting was with his predecessor, Governor Maitree Intrusud, on September 16.
Friday afternoon's forum has been postponed to make way for a meeting between the governor and the Prime Minister, Prayuth Chan-O-Cha.
Meetings with honorary consuls were introduced by Governor Wichai Praisa-ngob at the suggestion of former German Ambassador Dr Hanns H. Schumacher with the first meeting held in February, 2010.
Meetings were held roughly every three months until Governor Maitree took over.
The then German honorary consul, Dirk Nauman, said: ''These meetings will be an opportunity for us to express our concerns, and importantly, to listen to the concerns of the Governor. We are also hoping to hear his views on the future development of the island.''

What a great opportunity missed. Instead of cancelling the meeting with the consuls, they should have been invited to joint the meeting with Gen Prayut.
That is, if tourism safety really is a genuine concern for the current administrators.
