Phuket Clamp on Guides, Tourists Abusing Precious Environment

Sunday, June 14, 2015
PHUKET: Authorities in the southern province of Phuket have stepped up the monitoring system on the popular Koh Khai Island in search of rule-breaking tourists and ignorant guides.

Authorities from the Bureau of Tourism Business and Guide Registration and Tourist Police have joined hands observing the behavior of tourists and tour guides on Kho Khai, ready to give a warning to nature-spoiling visitors and impose disciplinary action on tour guides turning a blind eye to their tourists.

The operation came in response to a recent report on foreign tourists trying to lure rare fish with bread crumbs into a plastic bag.

The incident triggered widespread criticism among Thai people and environmentalists, right after it was shared in the social media.

Authorities blamed tourists' misconduct on tour leaders who failed to warn their clients against catching fish at natural attractions and explain to them the need to protect the environment.

The Bureau of Tourism Business and Guide Registration has cautioned tour agencies to closely monitor their clients.

Any tour agency and guide found to let their clients ruin attractions intentionally will face harsh penalties.

As a gesture of warning to operators, authorities reportedly warned tourists against catching fish. The tour guide's license was temporarily confiscated.

The restaurant on on Koh Khai Island is built illegally on public land; so, by closing it and in the same time the one nearby on the rocky rock owned by a foreigner, all tour groups will have no choice but to go somewhere else.

The guide holds ultimate responsibility to inform tourists about requested conduct and to control whether they are complying; people who never been to the sea, of course, have no clue how to behave. In egneral, recation of authorities is OK.

But true, this is only small part of problems, and enforcement nearly non-existant, only such sporadical , when you already don't understand whether they enforce laws like here just for media show, or they stil believe in a cause...

The results of this crack-down will require tour guides to look both ways before doing exactly what they have always done...ignore the rules. With the continuance of same same enforcement (or lack thereof) and silly fines of several hundred baht...nothing will change. They need to revoke the guide's license for good, and suspend the parent company from doing business for a month...make it sting. Then, maybe all parties will start catching on.

Caring for the environment? It's a bit of a joke really considering the Phuket continues to look more like a garbage dump on a daily basis.

Case in fact: Yesterday a minivan driver pulls up outside the wife's coffee shop. After consuming his food and drink he simply threw his garbage on the floor.

I asked very politely if he would pick it up and discard of it properly. His response ... I'm Thai, this Thailand, if you don't f****** like it f*** off back to your own country.

The other minivan drivers just laughed; they also threw their garbage on the floor.

@ Graham: The people in your comment are a lost generation. And their are many in Thailand, no understanding/feeling regarding environment.
Solution: In schools, education..education..education.

Sorry to say it will get a lot worse before it gets even a little better. Currently they are building a wall and widening Patak road between Chalong and Kata in doing so they cut out a little less than half a meter of road along the edge and just tossed it all over the side (someone else's environmental problem) and when done the next bus of truck that looses it's breaks will no longer go over the side instead it will possible pinball all the way to the bottom taking out everyone in their way.

@Kurt.. As you can check on internet the next generation is even worst than current one. Young people (that drop again in the the ranking of world student educational attainment) care only money, more than their parents: TV and media teach them !!!
