PHUKET: The captain of a fishing boat that was sunk by a Vietnamese cargo vessel as it passed Phuket is hoping to seek compensation.
Arom Sri-im, 58, went to Tachatchai Police Station after the 95-metre Phuong Nam 69 steamed through the 10-metre Wassana Waree about 8.30am yesterday without pausing.
''I think they should compensate me for the 1.5 million baht cost of my boat,'' the aggrieved captain told Lieutenant Thanom Thongpan.
The captain and his two crew jumped for their lives and had to be rescued by other fishing boats. The boat was off the coast, not far from the Sarasin Bridge linking Phuket to the mainland.
Lieutenant Thanom said there was little he could do.
''The cargo vessel simply continued its journey from Vietnam to Burma,'' he said.
''Khun Arom must consult with Phuket Marine Office 5 and if they say that the cargo vessel was in the wrong place, then maybe he has a chance of being compensated.''
