The protest sign says: Local buses are against nominee foreign vehicles

Phuket Bus Owners Protest Over 'Imported' Tourist Buses

Tuesday, September 8, 2015
PHUKET: Local bus owners staged a protest today at Central Festival intersection in Phuket City over the increasing number of off-island buses being used to transport tourists.

The bus owners dangled a sign from a footbridge near the intersection.

Local owners say too many private buses from off Phuket are being hired, especially by Chinese tour groups.

The Phuket Director of Tourism and Sport, Santi Palai, thought that the problem had been resolved in a round of talks with the Phuket bus owners.

He told them the agents booking buses needed reassurance that the vehicles and everyone on board was properly insured.

Given today's unusual protest, it's not clear whether the Phuket owners are prepared to meet the standards and compete or whether they hope to achieve a deal based on their Phuket residency.

Phuketwan believes all large buses except those on regular interprovincial runs should be banned from Phuket.

A mini-van only island would resolve some problems associated with slow traffic, frequent breakdowns and unwanted dangers on the island's hilly roads.

I would guess that Phuket based buses are not competitive. What is it about Thai people and competition? They just don't seem to like it.

On the other hand, if only Phuket buses were used for these tour groups then perhaps they could control the ever-increasing numbers of these buses on the island.

Duh !

What's next - independency for Phuket ?

Learn to live with real life competition. The feeling of entitlement of far too many Phuket "Businessmen" is truly mind-blowing.

These village bourgeoisie have no chance to sustain what they want within a contemporary economy of Thailand.
There is a freedom of establishment, a freedom to carry business within a country wherever you want.
Putting back feudal division will not help economy.
And don't forget what are two main problems facing the country: poverty and corruption.
Trying to establish a protected from competition oasis in Phuket, will only brings, in the end, more poverty, as it will stimulate to keep with low-productivity and efficiency.

It's probably because most of the Phuket ones have crashed and are out of service?

I believe any form of protests are illegal under a new law and need approval from police.

Hebert with respect to you but, "The feeling of entitlement of far too many Phuket 'Businessmen' is truly mind-blowing."
I've had many conversations with many Phuket-based businessmen and about 90% of them are not from here. They have absolutely no entitlement. This is where the thuggery stems from. It's open season on tourists with no synchronicity with local authorities- like Spain in the seventies and Chile in the eighties - anyone have any other examples? They have an expression in Spanish: "Donde hay plata hay drogas." (Where there's money you'll find drugs". This could translate in Phuket as "Donde hay plata hay corruption."
