THE Phuket Brewery frothed and bubbled and overflowed with fun last night.
The grand opening of the new entertainment venue gave the island something to sing and dance about, and a new beer to try.
It was a sight to delight the people who have been waiting for years for a venue capable of attracting top acts.
And everything the crowd of more than 1000 saw at the Brewery last night justified their faith.
Brewery management put on a show to remember, a grand evening that set the standard for more to come.
The opening night still did not fill the downstairs area, which can hold 1200 people. Upstairs, there is space for 530 more, and every seat has an uninterrupted view of the stage.
What people saw last night began with the Phuket Brewery's own showband, playing jazz and Thai contemporary music.
That got the crowd's attention. Dinner was being served at tables as the music played.
German bratwust sausage with sauerkraut was one choice for the first course, followed by tom yum pla (fish soup) and fried rice with vegetables.
Chocolate cake arrived for dessert.
For the first time, drinkers were able to taste the Brewery's own brand, Pearl Beer. The general opinion: Can we have a second mug, please?
The beer was served in long containers to keep it frothy and fresh at the tables. A litre of Pearl sells for 240 baht.
But last night, everything was free and the Brewery picked up the tab. The venue, opposite Tesco-Lotus supermarket, stayed open until midnight, which will be the usual closing time.
Last night's performance began about 7.40pm and continued all night long.
Variety entertainment included acrobats, jugglers, a magician and plenty of dancers.
Thai pop group the ETC Band was the surprise highlight in a performance that indicated top-line names should be on the agenda.
For a first night, dealing with 1000 people, the service was good.
PB General Manager Wuthipong Rattanawarunwong told the audience he hoped the Brewery would become a regular place for families and for people to meet each other and have a good time.
Children were welcome at the Brewery with their parents but the 200 staff were trained to refuse alcoholic drinks to anyone under 18, Khun Wuthipong said
Concerts have been organised as far ahead as April, with modern dog already booked for December 17.
Khun Wuthipong expects the Brewery to be at 60 percent capacity from the opening date.
That historic event arrives with the sold-out first concert by the rock band Carabao on November 21.
From then on, Phuket can expect a regular supply of headline acts. Sometime in 2009, Phuket can finally expect to see top international acts.
From the Carabao show on, the facilities at the Brewery will be open to the public, with the outdoor dining area open from 10.30am and entertainment inside every night.
