Wheels return the gold necklet to the Hardings at Karon Police Station

Phuket Bobbies on Bicycles Nab Necklet Snatchers, Give Gold Back to British Tourist

Saturday, November 15, 2014
PHUKET: Police in a new bicycle patrol have arrested three Cambodians who confessed to snatching a gold necklet from a British tourist on the first day of his Phuket holiday.

Two of the Cambodians pretended to befriend the tourist, Karl Harding, about 9pm on Thursday as he walked along beach road in Karon. They snatched the necklet then passed it to a third person on a motorcycle, who sped off, say police.

Today officers on foreshore patrol spotted suspects who looked like the trio who had pulled the heist, moved in and arrested them in the same vicinity.

With Mr Harding's necklet in a bag, Cambodians Lon, 23 Lontien, 30 and Am, 23, a ladyboy, quickly confessed.

The Cambodians said they usually worked at a Cambodia-Thaland border crossing but employment there had become more difficult to obtain, so they moved to Phuket.

Mr Harding and his wife Angela, regular visitors to Phuket, collected the necklet at Karon Police Station.

They are staying at a Karon resort and hope to enjoy the rest of their holiday until November 24.

Every criminal they catch in Thailand readily confesses when spoken to by police I wish they would explain how they do this phenomenon to western enforcement agency's.

Being Buddhist helps.

With the Buddhist rational they should not have done it in the first place. The justice system is so out of kilter here that they probably know they are screwed no matter what and a confession lowers the prison time.

Well sunflower once upon a time that was neither a problem here or most places abroad. Most tourist probably still see (in the catalogue) Patong as a nice holiday destination, not Bronx in New York

I take it 'necklet' is Oz for 'necklace?

necklet - an ornament worn round the neck.

necklace - a piece of jewelry consisting of a string of stones, beads, jewels, or the like, or a chain of gold, silver, or other metal, for wearing around the neck.

@sunlover

People would be stupid if they would be warned about abundance of petty theft and did not follow the advise.
It is far from apparent that ANY jewelry - or how I explain it to my friends when they come to Thailand - actually anything of value that can be easily removed like DLR camera or a hint that they could have too much cash on them - should be avoided.

In Dubai as well as in Central London is rather normal to walk on a street in large-size quality diamond earrings etc., and in many holiday destination it is safe as well.

@Sunlover "they have to blame themself"... that's like saying someone deserves to be raped for wearing a bikini.
