Phuket Blackspots to be Obliterated in Highways Special Projects
By Prasit Tarnsirisin Wednesday, November 5, 2014
PHUKET: Some of Phuket's most dangerous blackspots are to be obliterated under a series of new works to be undertaken by Phuket's Highways Department in coming months.
The department's director, Samak Luedwonghad, provided a list of the projects. Most residents who drive around Phuket will recognise Phuket's most nightmarish curves and corners among them.
The total budget of 111.5 million baht has been approved and if contractors can be appointed quickly, work on all of the projects should begin in December and continue for six to seven months. :
Simon Cabaret coast road out of Patong. Uphill section to be widened and remade, starting in December, taking seven months. 20m baht
Heroines Monument two lanes being improved to four lanes, 600 metres to Supalai Village. 14m baht
Bang Jo Intersection Two lanes to four lanes. Taking 6-7 months from December 15m baht
Chalong Circle road to Kata Karon. Structural work on the hill curve, concrete barrier to protect drivers turning right 15m baht
Tachatchai widening main road 10m baht
Patong Hill Structural reshaping of uphill section 11m baht
Patong Hill Structural reshaping of downhill section 17m baht
Kamala Intersection Surface upgrade 9.5m baht

Far most of all Black spots are caused by placing signs on the wrong places. Signs pools/bushes who block the drivers views. Placed without Logic on the wrong locations. Most likely Authorised or approved by people who don't know the meaning or how to write logic in English or Thai.

Heroines Monument two lanes being made into four is completed and has made it more dangerous than it was before as the traffic goes even faster, the tight right hand corner has now become a kind of "S" bend, I saw three crashes (although not serious) in three days once it was opened fully.

You may have the wrong section of road, Ian. These are all new projects for 2015, none of them started.
Heroines Monument, would it not be a better idea to make an underpass?
Also the authorities could consider greatly improving the driving standards, this would also prevent potential accidents from happening, especially on the backstops they describe in this article.

That's likely but not in the Highways Department budget.
I think relocating the Heroines to a nice location like a park and then at the very least make it a cross road with traffic lights.

Actually bypassing Heroines with a continuation to the north of Thalang and making that section of Thepkasattri road 'local' traffic would rid the island of a daily major traffic jam, frayed nerves and accidents.

...still people drive on 8-lanes Arc de Triomphe roundabout without many accidents, obviously because they're used respect fellow drivers.

Great idea coxo, is that so we can have more accidents with all those that love jumping the lights, red & green,as happens at the Rajabhat intersection nearly everyday????

Ian is correct Ed. It is now 4 lanes wide from Heriones to Supalai where it narrows back down to 2 lanes. Not quite sure way it stops there. Believe the plan is to continue 4 lanes in the future. Perhaps that is what is in the 2015 budget.

Ian is correct. Heroines work is complete. Pass that way daily. New surface, 2 lanes now 4. New U-turn points, a new central reservation already grassed. New street lighting installed on the central reservation. It's from approximately the 7-11 going West, past the new Honda dealership towards Supalai Village, and as your article states, it's approx 600m. However it is most definitely complete. works were ongoing for about 3 months or more. Finished about 2 weeks or so ago.

The Heroines is mostly finished... still a bit to do, but I never thought it was much of a black spot really. The Heroines junction/ circle/ thing is much more dangerous. That needs a new plan altogether.

A great and very cost effective way to improve traffic safety would be to enforce a zero tolerance policy on driving on the wrong side of the road.
This is however unlikely to happen because unlike putting up a sign post, it would mean active onsite work for the traffic police. Considering how they just sit around at the usual Karon checkpoint when countless motorbikes can be seen waiting at the top of the hill and not bothering to go and check them, I don't expect this suggestion to ever come to fruition either.
It seems to me that local police are very creative when it comes to anything but actual law enforcement.

And what suggestions of improvement do you have 'Phuket Madness', as a roundabout in its present form there are daily accidents. If you are going to be critical at least put forward some type of proposal!

It's not really the roads, but the drivers.
Remove ALL U-Turns and accident rates would half.

Re Heroine's Monument Circle. Why not educate drivers how to enter and exit a circle properly.
