Phuket to Become Asean Crime Data Centre, Says Top Thai Police Chief

Wednesday, March 4, 2015
PHUKET: A senior national police chief urged Phuket police yesterday to become more aware of tourists and their movements on the holiday island to better protect them.

Deputy Police Commissioner General Wut Lipatapanlop made his comments to about 60 senior Phuket officers.

He visited the Chalong Yacht Centre and added that special care needed to be taken with visitors who arrived by sea.

General Wut added that the coming of the Asean Economic Community would leave Phuket as the ideal place to establish a Transnational Crime Data Centre with the assistance of Interpol.

It would become even more important for the holiday island's police to know where tourists were at all times and to be able to track inbound and outbound movements.

''Officers will also need to be able to know when tourists are on tours,'' he told a large audience of Royal Thai Police, Immigration and Highway Department officers.

''Improving your English skills is vital, too.''

Ahhhhh- another 'hub' for Phuket. How many is that now- I seem to have lost count.

Another "grab the headlines comment" by someone with authority not willing to actually deliver.

That said, sounds like he's laying the groundwork for the return of Khun Kobkarn's tourist wrist band project ;-)

Perhaps all foreigners should have a GPS tracker chip implanted and a yellow flashing light attached to their heads?

This place is getting more draconian by the day. Orwell would be proud.

All foreign criminals will be asked to report to immigration with triplicate copies of their documents and a hand-drawn map of their location. Easy!
