Beach chair reps show documents they say prove their legality

Phuket Beach Workers Called In By Police: Officials Cite Tsunami Approval

Wednesday, December 3, 2014
PHUKET: Eighteen people reported to Phuket police today over alleged offences relating to beach commerce as community leaders claimed the Interior Ministry gave them permission to work along Phuket's coast after the tsunami.

The 18 who responded to summonses at Karon Police Station today, with supporters, are the first of 102 members of the Kata-Karon Beach Chair Association who have been called to report.

Seventeen more will report tomorrow along with others in succession.

Twelve more people, the leaders of the association, including the mayor, have already been charged.

The association leader, Sunan Boonyawat, said today at the police station that the beach chair operators had done nothing wrong.

''After the tsunami on December 26, 2004, the Interior Ministry working with the mayors approved people working on the beaches to recover from the disaster,'' he said.

''More than 30 people, including senior officials, were on the committee that approved the project.''

The problem was never about people selling things on the beach or having a few chairs to rent to beach goers.

The problem was people claiming ownership of public beaches and officials corruptly allowing it for payment. This led to vast areas of public beaches being controlled by chair renters.

If they allow people to do this again it will just be a matter of time before all the previous problems return.

I was never against sunbeds or vendors but what happened at places like Surin beach was beyond a joke.

Just the silly title "Kata-Karon Beach Chair Association" makes me laugh. The post tsunami approvals were likely a means to get people back on their feet... not a new career path for lazy locals to spend the rest of their lives sweeping sand off of beach chairs and fleecing tourists. All these people need to go out and get real jobs.

if loungers/ umbrellas food and drinks are available people flock! including me

if the sand is devoid of this and one has to sit in the blazing sun inviting skin cancer-----
so-- the beach looks nice, no bugger on it though
i reckon the jetski thugs will be annoyed less customers to screw over

The beaches here must keep their unique natural aspect, with trees to provide shade. I don't want these ranges of plastic beds that cover the sand and obstruct the landscape anymore. But rented umbrellas and folding chairs are welcome if rented from outside the sand and brought back to the merchant after use. It is a serious issue, the ministry of defence should be the authority in charge, not the locally elected people.

@surf starved katoey, what does this nonsense have to do with you surfing??? Nothing prevents you from surfing anywhere. Then again, if you came here for the big surf trip, you must be a complete kook. This issue of a "Beach Chair Association" is so ridiculous that people in most parts of the world just laugh.

without loungers to relax and parasols to protect, Phuket beaches are no longer so attractive, where in hell did the authorities come up with such a brain dead idea?

Editor Comment:

Attractive to a small minority who make them unattractive to everybody.
