Phuket Beach Weddings Fine in Karon, Says Official

Tuesday, March 10, 2015
PHUKET: There is no ban on people wishing to wed on Phuket's Karon beach, the local chief officer, Weerasak Anekwongsawat, said yesterday.

''Our interpretation of the regulations is that couples who wish to marry on the beach only need to let the municipal council know in advance,'' he said.

His comment came after an Australian couple's wedding on a small beach further north caused a furore when officials in Cherng Talay reportedly fined a resort 2000 baht for holding the beach wedding without permission.

A staffer at the five-star Surin Resort confirmed to Phuketwan that the wedding had taken place on Saturday on Pansea beach.

Pansea beach is one of several secluded coves on Phuket where council officers would only find out what was happening by making frequent trips there by boat.

Phuket has a thriving wedding and honeymoon industry that could be seriously affected if beach marriages were totally banned the way that beach chairs have been.

All of Phuket's west coast beaches were supposed to have signs up from yesterday advertising the long list of regulations that administrators are applying in an attempt to allow small pockets of commercial activity to return to beaches.

All beaches were cleared of illegal businesses by the military last year.

But Khun Weerasak said there were no signs on Karon or Kata or the other beaches in the district because there had been no means of meeting the budget of 900,000 baht for the signs.

The billboards with Dos and Don'ts for tourists have been erected at some beaches around Phuket, but not others.

The decision that has brought the most concern from tourists so far is the ban on beach chairs. Some visitors say the ban means they won't be back to Phuket.

Others cannot understand why Phuket does not join the neighboring provinces of Phang Nga and Krabi in banning jet-skis, which are often the cause of injuries, deaths and regular rip-offs.

Still more are puzzled that umbrellas and beach mats have been permitted to return, yet the comfortable sunbeds that made a beach visit more pleasant remain banned.

It almost seems like each beach is now in competition with other beaches on what is allowed and what isn't.

Clean Beach zone ( 90%), and Special zone (10%) is NOT existing at NaiHarn beach.
Beach vendors or don't know about how much is 90%, 10%, or they don't care, of course with back up of brothers/uncles who are councils who also invested historically in all the beach 'equipment'.

900,000 thb needed for signs to tell the tourists that their freedom has been limited to give more space for jet skies and parasailing.
Why karon not tell the jet sky 'vendors' to pay that budget? Afterall they got more beach space, pushed away the tourists to limited zones.
I think when you come to Phuket now as a tourist, you feel you are being sett in a kinder garden beach class. And you have choice, every beach has own rules ( not supported by any law). hahahaha
Choose your favorite beach kinder garden.

"budget of 900,000 baht for the signs" How many signs will that be?

A wise person wrote in a comment of another article, that Thais do not acknowledge the opinion of strangers. However if they want to continue with budgets, like nearly 1 mill bath for a few signs, then it would be smart to listen to comments concerning future income possibilities.

Users of jet-skis and para-sailors are not able to pay budgets like this, so understanding of that the bulk of money comes from the majority of tourists is quite important for the future size of budgets.

Thus it is quite incomprehensible, that an industri which generates relative small money, from a minority of tourists, has been allowed to take over the entire swimming area of Patong Beach now.

Does really not take much brain to do the math for which rental industri to support - hundred jet-skis and a few parasail speedboats or thousands of beach loungers. The arguments about legality would be the same for all beach rental business.

@ Kurt

Please do us all a favor and try to grasp that it's Jet-Ski, not Jet-Sky.

Vielen Dank im Voraus.

Sounds like the Mayor of Karon knows a good opportunity when he see it. It is ridiculous that each municipality cannot identify an area or two along their beaches where weddings are permitted for a fee (2,000 baht fine is silly, why not charge a 3,000 baht fee for renting the beach space).

Herbert,

jet-skis in sky high numbers are jet-sky, so what's wrong? jet-sky is a very precise designation of sets of jet-ski at Phuket beaches
