Polluted water remains a problem on Racha island, off Phuket

Phuket Authorities Visit Racha Again But Pollution Problems Continue

Sunday, September 28, 2014
PHUKET: The owner of a resort on the island of Racha, a popular destination off Phuket, has been given another month to make improvements and put an end to pollution.

Phuket Vice Governor Dr Sommai Preechasin led a delegation to visit Racha again this week, but changes that have been requested several times in the past have yet to be made.

Local conservationist Sarit Jandee told the owner of the Rayaburi, Somchant Somnam: ''When are you going to fix the problem of bad water coming from your hotel?''

Khun Somchant: ''We've been talking about this for a long time. What's the new issue?''

Khun Sarit: ''Your bad water is still the issue and it has been for three years.''

Khun Somchant said that he needed one more month to put in place a plan to reduce the effluent from the resort that pollutes the local water.

Khun Sarit said that local authorities were well aware of the problem and had been visiting Racha for a long time now but there had been no enforcement or attention to the problem.

''I wonder how much longer the coral off the beach will survive,'' he asked.

Many day-trippers still visit the island and head back to Phuket without realising the pollution taking place on the other side of the island.

What an arrogant man ! So he thinks he can pollute a wonderful place and that's ok? It's thanks to people like him that Thailand has become the polluted, overbuilt place it is.

Phuket Vice Governor Dr Sommai Preechasin has to close the hotel until the problem is fixed.

@elizabeth - Yes he does think he can do it - as he has been doing it for years and clearly Government officials seem to lack the motivation to put an end to it.

When I saw the photos of the meeting attended by so many Government officials my mouth was falling open, I do not understand that the thai government not immediately closed down hotel operations until the hotel owner has fixed the pollution matter. Why given another month to continue pollution? This is bad publicity for Thailand's tourist industry on and around Phuket. Another location here that needs attention of NCPO.

Close the hotel down until further notice. We are still under Martial Law. Get with it and save the environment now please. Just close it down.

Everyone knows which resort it is. If everyone gets on the social media: TripAdvisor, Facebook and Twitter - hit them where it hurts -- bookings.

The problem has gone on long enough. It is amazing what some real negative exposure for the resort can accomplish. They don't really care about Thai news that the majority of tourists do not read.
If you have time to post here, you have time to post on the above.

This Racha surrounding polluting is happening now for 3 years. Why a vice governor is going there again for talks?

NCPO Deputy advocate that Phuket development must strike balance with nature! Why is Phuket government by now already 3 years 'behind' with this Racha hotel owners? Will the hotel owner be forced to pay for the clean up of the reef?
