Phuket Customs chief with mule-in-a-hood Ratchanee Chidnaporn

Phuket Airport Drugs Haul: I Was Fooled, says Faceless Ice Mule

Sunday, August 14, 2011
PHUKET: A Thai woman who covered her head through a media presentation last night said she did not know that she was carrying ya ice with a street value of 10.5 million baht on a flight to Phuket International Airport.

Ratchanee Chidnaporn, 39, was arrested when Customs officers detected 3.2 kilos of the methamphetamine following a positive scan on luggage after a flight from Doha arrived on Phuket yesterday afternoon.

Phuket International Airport Director of Customs Montira Cherchoo warned drug smugglers who may see Phuket as a ''soft'' entry point that Phuket authorities were adept at spotting suspicious passengers and intent on capturing couriers.

''If Khun Ratchanee had not been arrested, she planned to catch a taxi from Phuket airport to Phuket bus station,'' Director Montira said. ''Then she planned to catch a bus to Bangkok.''

A national and international alert was out for the woman's contacts in Bangkok and South Africa, the Customs chief said.

After her apprehension and discovery of the hidden drugs, Khun Ratchanee told Phuket airport authorities that she flew to Johannesburg in South Africa on August 6 at the invitation of a Thai man she had known for five months.

Her passport was issued on August 2, officials said.

The man in South Africa paid the fares and took care of accommodation. When the time came for Khun Ratchanee to return he said: ''Please can you take this bag for me to Thailand.''

Her flight from South Africa via Doha brought a random check on Phuket that detected drugs despite efforts to screen the hoard behind wood.

Khun Ratchanee said she was not paid for carrying the drugs and did not know there were drugs in her luggage.

''We know that smugglers are now worried by enhanced safeguards at Suvarnabhumi airport in Bangkok,'' Phuket Customs chief Montira said. ''But Phuket is no pushover.

''We cannot check every passenger thoroughly because that would have consequences for Phuket tourism.

''But we are very active and well-trained and on the lookout for suspicious types, especially those flying in from Africa and South America.

''We aim to catch everyone who tries to smuggle drugs into Thailand through Phuket.''

Phuket's Customs officials won praise from US Drug Enforcement Administration agents for making Asia's first seizure of difficult-to-detect ''black'' cocaine in May.

How can believe? After flying for 20 hours from South Africa to Phuket, " she planned to catch a taxi from Phuket airport to Phuket bus station, than she planned to catch a bus to BKK. " The question is, why didn't she fly directly to BKK from South Africa, instead landing to Phuket?

How about reading the article before waxing lyrical mario - Phuket is seen as a soft option entry point, especially with the increase in direct flights. Criminals (alleged or otherwise) don't necessarily take the obvious routes - this all part of the deception and reduces the chances of getting caught.

Mister Ree, I think what Mario is trying to say is this. She claims that she did not know she was carrying drugs and just some guy gave her a bag. Yet, her plans were to fly to Phuket and board a bus to Bangkok. If she did not know she was carrying drugs then why would she not just fly to Bangkok directly? Therefore how can she be believed?

I apologize Mario if I misunderstand your comments. If I understand correctly it is a pretty good point and indicates that he read the article pretty well.

The answer to your question Mario is exactly as you have suggested. She didn't fly direct to Bangkok because she knew perfectly well what she was carrying and the laws she was breaking, as suggested by Mister Ree.

Martin and Mario , As I read it her ticket was paid for by the man in South Africa and therefore she may not have had a choice on which airport she arrived into..

Possibly lozza but in the article it also states that the drugs were hidden in her bag behind a piece of wood in order to conceal them. So according to her the guy asked her to take a bag for him with a weight over 3 kg's and she thought nothing of it (might be a bomb, might be drugs, might be anything). Additionally that he told her that it would have to be concealed so no one would find it or she decided on her own that she would conceal it. Again, she did not find this suspicious and never thought a thing about it. Also with a street value of 10 Mil you are assuming this guy just handed it over to her and sent her on her way without her knowing what to do with it when she got here? I could go on but face it, her story is a S T R E T C H on any level from pretty much start to finish.

Her passport was only issued on 2 August, so what's a 39 year old woman doing travelling to South Africa in the first place? I reckon the police tracked her from the moment she left Thailand, so it wouldn't matter where she landed, she would have been targeted the moment she set foot on Thai soil again.
