PHUKET: A substantial fire sent smoke curling across the holiday island of Phi Phi today where water is precious and expensive.
The blaze broke out in a restaurant at Moo 7, near the tsunami village.
Drinking water has to be imported to Phi Phi and it's expensive. The laneways are also narrow and, with buildings often close together, a fire could quickly take hold and spread.
Residents of Phi Phi were fortunate though that the Water Hill Factory was opposite the blaze so precious water could be used to quickly extinguish the flames.
An early estimate put the damage caused by the fire at one million baht.
